kerravonsen: cartoon Ood: "would you like a piece of my mind?" (Ood)

Due to mastodon.au currently being down, I was looking around on mastodon.art, which I'm not as active on. And I started looking at the admin announcements. And about three or four announcements back, they say a few things about the Gnu Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). They explain in a non-hysterical way that the name GIMP was not chosen innocently -- the creators of the program admit that it was due to the word "gimp" used in "Pulp Fiction" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP#cite_note-8). Therefore they would have known that the word was a slur, and they have been told repeatedly that it was a slur and have not changed the name.

IMHO, I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt (e.g. Coon Cheese was named after Mr. Coon who invented the specific process for that cheese, and therefore I am certain that they did not intend for it to be racist) but if somebody knew from the get-go that the name they were using was an insult, and went ahead with it anyway, that's a problem. Perhaps they considered it a kind of self-depreciating humour -- that they felt their program to be such a humble offering that it was a cripple, but many people have not taken it that way.

So... I'm going to be changing all references that I can when I'm talking about the Gnu Image Manipulation Program. In the future, I'll refer to it as GnuIMP. I'm not going to even attempt to change past posts, that's too difficult to track down and alter, but at least I'll be changing my wording from now on.

Yes, it's a small thing, but it is easily done, so why shouldn't I be courteous if it doesn't cost me much?

I had always wondered why they had chosen such an odd name for the program, but I had assumed that it was inadvertent.

There is definitely something hinky going on with the Dreamwidth posting interface: it thinks that the current time is UTC, and when I change it to MY time...

...at least it isn't complaining that I'm posting it in the future.

Oh, and when I do an email-post, the time is correct.

As you may have noticed, I've started posting stuff again. I have no idea what y'all been doing, as I've been away from DW for a while, because Stuff.
As trying to catch up with everything that's happened with you all is so daunting it would make me crawl under a rock again, please do tell me here what you've been up to, major events I ought to know, or like anything you want to say.

Hi everyone!

Is it just me, or are Dreamwidth posts failing to crosspost to LiveJournal?

ETA: Okay, *this* posted okay, but my friendslocked post didn't. Hmmm.
kerravonsen: (Default)
Alas, I think it is time to trim my subscriptions/flist; I am finding it too difficult to keep up with everyone. So this is advance notice that if I unfriend you, it's nothing personal.
I will also probably be removing duplicates where people are on both DW and LJ. If you have a preference for which one I follow you on, let me know.

Now that community imports are enabled on Dreamwidth, I have moved [livejournal.com profile] multific on LJ to [community profile] multific on Dreamwidth. The old comm is still there, I haven't deleted it, but all new activity will take place on the Dreamwidth comm.
The announcement is here: http://multific.livejournal.com/46081.html

From [personal profile] yvi:
With recent problems with LJ, there has been an influx of people coming over from there, and a significant portion of those users are from Russia, blogging in Russian. There have been complaints about this, and one of those complaints annoyed me enough that I ranted about it.

And thoughts came up for a non-English language fest on Dreamwidth. And there was the question of whether this should be a fest (length to be determined) for people posting in non-English or if it should be more focused on native speakers posting in their language. The first option was favored, however, I am going for the other one.

Okay, it looks like nobody wants to be on the twitter filter. Fine, I'll make them all private. I still want to post so that I have a record in my main blog-place of what I've been twitting.

I'm paying the price of all that programming yesterday; my shoulder hurts. 8-(

Anyone needing to get themselves a backup journal while LJ is having its troubles - I have Dreamwidth invite codes! Just sayin'.

I have invite codes to give out!

I have one invite code for An Archive Of Our Own.
Already gone!

I also have several Dreamwidth invite codes, which I fear you folk will ignore, as you have ignored them before. However, as my flist has changed a little since then, I am asking again.

If you want an invite, comment here with an email address (I can't use the invite code without one). First come, first served.

Pretty!

I have re-done my Dreamwidth journal's styling with nice warm wood backgrounds. I like it. Come see!

Looky! I have a custom mood theme! I put it on too.katspace.org (see, that's a good use for the site), and while it was glitching yesterday, I put in a support request today, and it seems to have come good, at least for me from my home computer. If any of you have trouble seeing my mood theme, let me know.

Also, two of the people I've invited to Dreamwidth haven't accepted their invites yet.

And I'm glad it's the weekend. I have far too much to do. (sigh) Finish-a-thon dragging as ever. I have a [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang story to read and illustrate. And chores to do.

Oh, and stories to read and review for the [livejournal.com profile] smith_awards. Go thou and do likewise!

I still have five three one Dreamwidth invite available!

Comments are screened; leave an email address and I can send you an invite.

This is not an incitement to abandon LiveJournal; most people seem to be using Dreamwidth as a mirror, or emergency back-up, or both. Okay?

Eeeee! I got a seed account! When I clicked on the shop page, it said "less than 200 seed accounts available". I was order #429. When I'd finished contending with PayPal, the shop page said "less than 50 seed accounts available". But I got one, whee! I was afraid I wouldn't because I expected them to go very fast. Though if I had missed it, I could have had another try for the second batch, selling 12 hours later. Fortunately the time-zone difference smiled on me for once, since I didn't have to get up at 2am or whatever in order to make it to the opening.

(I meant to post this last night or this morning, but I didn't manage to)

There have been a few people on my flist wondering what all the fuss is about Dreamwidth; isn't it just another GreatestJournal or InsaneJournal? Another LJ clone run by someone in their spare time, something that won't last? Something always lagging behind LJ in features?

Well, no.

Let me tell you why...

I have a Dreamwidth account, and I am intending to cross-post to both LJ and Dreamwidth, definitely in the short term, and probably the long term unless my entire flist migrates to Dreamwidth or LJ goes down, whichever comes first. Since my LJ account is a permanent account, it's not like I have to do anything more to keep it running.
kerravonsen: 9th Doctor wearing his headlamp: Technical wizard (technical-wiz)
I have a Dreamwidth account!!!
Please to be telling me if you are on Dreamwidth too, and who you are there.

So I have now joined the ranks of those who do massive cross-posting on multiple personal journals (LJ, IJ, Inksome, and now Dreamwidth). I was using Charm at first, but while it sort of supports cross-posting, it isn't really oriented towards that. So I have just finished writing (and quick-testing) a script (perl script, which uses the LJ::Simple interface) which cross-posts to multiple journals at the same time. Yay! It's a very simple command-line interface, nothing fancy, but I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

I'm thinking of deleting the inksome journal, though. Dreamwidth will be better, and IJ was able to import all my past entries, while Inksome couldn't. I have imported all my past entries to Dreamwidth too.

Bring on the open beta!
