It's called (wait for it!) LJ Add-ons. It's a Firefox extension that has features like randomising userpics, and a thread expander. And a million other things that I don't actually use.

You can do that in LJ too - I just did it for this post :) It's been around a while; can't remember exactly how long.

How? The only way I know of doing it with LJ is with a Firefox-add-on (which I have now added on because someone informed me about it just now). Not a feature of LJ itself.

When you hit reply and it gives you the box, it says: "Picture to use:" and a window that opens that shows all your icons.

Er, but that's not a random icon, that's just browsing one's icons.

Oh, so you like it to pop up random icons rather than specific ones? Okay, you're right, but that's not something I'd want. If I veer away from the default it's to choose one for a specific purpose.

I use icons for specific purposes too, but I have so many of them that there can be more than one that fits, and I don't want to fall into a rut with my icon usage. I'm just trying it out for now, who knows, I could find that it ends up annoying me.

The way the firefox add-on works is different from the way Dreamwidth works, too. The firefox add-on sets a random icon as soon as one opens the comment, and then one can select a specfic one (as I've done just now).
The Dreamwidth feature has a specific "random icon" link, which one can click to choose a random icon, and click again to get another one. I prefer that method, actually.

Nope. No little button for me. And I have a Permanent account, so I should be getting the same features as a Paid account.

I have figured it out. It isn't a Livejournal feature at all - it's a different firefox plugin, called Livejournal Hook (as distinct from the one I initially installed, which is called Livejournal Addon). Livejournal Hook has that very button. It has fewer features than Livejournal Addon, but since the only feature I was really wanting was the random icon, AND Livejournal Hook implements it in the way I prefer (with a button that one can click more than once) then that is the Add-on I am going with.

Now that's weird. I have no recollection of installing LJ Hook, yet I see it when I right-click. And I could have sworn I remembered someone mentioning the random icon feature in comments on one of the news posts.

Ah well, I'm glad you solved the mystery!
