(Day 7 will come out of order, when I've finished the item which I've started for Day 7)
Day 8

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.
kerravonsen: Kerr Avon, frowning: Character is PLOT (Avon-character)
Day Six

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

"The Pattern of Infinity" by Ana Dorfstad (Blake's 7) was the very first piece of fan fiction I ever read. Because it was well-written, I didn't equate bad writing with this genre; my standards remained high. Because I wrote to the author, I found fandom, and some of my longest and dearest friends. Some have gone, some are still here. But certainly my life would be very different if I hadn't picked up that spiral-bound typed draft that weekend, and started reading it.
kerravonsen: Snape, Hermione: "Believe" (Snape-Hermione)
Day 5

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

My post for this topic in 2012.

This time, I will talk of Caeria, the author of Pet Project. Why? Because that story has been the single most influential work on my own Harry Potter writing, especially my SS/HG stuff. There are so many world-building things I've been influenced by: House Elf culture, Arithmancy, challenging Hermione's ignorance of Wizarding culture, Hermione having lessons in critical thinking... mucho kudos, that's all I can say.
kerravonsen: Gandalf and the Ninth Doctor, with lightning: Storm Crows. (StormCrows)
Day 3

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

My recs from 2012 and 2013.

This time I'm going to do fanfic, yes, but focus on the odd and obscure...

By Divine Intervention: The Revenge of the Mary Sue by Technoelfie (Lord of the Rings) (39379 words) Novella
It's got Legolas in it again. The poor elf is becoming allergic to 21st century girls with nice hair, so what happens when a fedup reader who's got the hots for the elf decides to become a MarySue herself?
(AU Alternate Reality, Self-insertion)
Since I recently saw The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and my eldest niece was raving on about Legolas, I thought I'd read this one again. It's still worth re-reading, yes. It's an odd duck; partly parody, partly serious, yet it still works. Give it a go if you don't mind a bit of meta with your fic.

Muse by Marcus Rowland (CSI/Sandman) (280 words)
Grissom thinks of her as his Muse.
This one is very short, and very fitting.

The Rooster Man Of Gondor by Chelsea Nolen (Lord Of The Rings) (1406 words)
An unusual perspective of the siege at Gondor.
(Missing Scene)
I'm reccing this story because this was the story which convinced me that it actually was possible to write LOTR fanfic without violating canon. Back then I was very much against book-fic, so it was impressive that this story changed my mind.
kerravonsen: Miss Parker, only her boots are visible: "Highly explosive" (Miss Parker)
Day 2

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

[livejournal.com profile] sshg_promptfest is the successor to the SSHG Exchange. It's more laid-back, but still celebrates my only OTP, Severus Snape/Hermione Granger, and produces some great stuff. I love it also because it's one of the few (if any?) exchange/challenge/ficathon fests which includes art and craft as well as fic as appropriate things to produce for the fest.

[livejournal.com profile] calufrax is still going, despite some rumbles. The best place for Doctor Who fic recs, IMHO.

M.A.I.L. (Maille Artisans International League isn't quite fannish, but they have helped in my fannish craftmaking, so I declare that they count. If you want to know anything about making chainmaille, this is the place to go. Huge number of weaves, lots of articles, and the folks on the forum are helpful and friendly.
kerravonsen: Crafty: a medly of beads (craft)
Day One:

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

It doesn't have to be your most popular fanwork, or the one you think is the best representation of what you do. Just something you created that you want to share. And remember, we're open to any and all kinds of fanworks. Fic, podfic, knitting, meta, a rec list, fanmix... the list is pretty much endless. If you think it qualifies, then it totally does. End of story :)

First, just pointing you to the self-recs I did for this challenge in 2012 and in 2013.
and here are the recs for this year )
kerravonsen: Fiction/Poetry/Art: it's cheaper than therapy (cheaper-than-therapy)
Day Nine

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I have made a Harry-Potter SSHG themed necklace.
kerravonsen: Fiction/Poetry/Art: it's cheaper than therapy (cheaper-than-therapy)
Day 8

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some examples: complete a bingo, sign up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep putting off. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Hmmmmm.
I think I will have a few fannish goals for this coming year. Not too many, not too unrealistic, or I will just be discouraged.

1. Uploads: to go through last year's [livejournal.com profile] tthdrabbles drabbles and actually upload them to all my archives.

2. Revision: to revise "Memoria Veritas" and upload it to all my archives.

3. Rewrite: to actually sit down and do the rewrite of "By Any Other Name" that I've been putting off for years.

4. Semi-fannish goal: make more jewellery that is symbolic rather than just pretty. This is semi-fannish because some pieces will be more fannish than others.

All of those (apart from #4) are a sort of clearing-the-decks exercise, but it will be a weight off my mind when they're done.

what to do with my jewellery? )
kerravonsen: I don't have enough faith to be an atheist. (faith-atheist)
Day 7

In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. We are more than just our fandoms. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

If you want to know something I am passionate about, I think I shall have to give the same answer as last time: my Christian faith. It's there at the back of everything, like the water that a fish swims in. But I tend to post more fannish stuff here, so the folks who joined my flist/circle since last year might not be aware of it.

So I invite y'all: ask me questions about what I believe, and I'll answer them as best I can. I know that religion can be an inflammatory topic, so I'm trusting y'all to be polite and respectful, and in that trust, I'm not f'locking this post. Please don't give me cause to regret that.
kerravonsen: Ace looking down, with the Doctor's hand on her shoulder (Ace)
Day 6

In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

there be comms, my pretty! )
kerravonsen: Stone egg on moss: "Art is Life, Life is Art" (art)
Day 5

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before.

I pick "working in a new medium"... which is a continuation of newness from 2012. To wit, doing fannish craft.
To make this a proper "something new", today I started a new project with a new craft. Chain maille. I'm not sure how the final product will turn out, but my starting point is to do two chains (in box-chain, because that seems to suit the rings I have); one chain is green and silver, the other is gold and copper. Yep. Slytherin and Gryffindor. It will probably take forever to do, so I may just do the chains and call it a day. We shall see.

Anyway, that is something new.
kerravonsen: Ninth Doctor holding out his hand: "Come with me if you want to Live" (Doc9-come-with-me)
Day 4

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Here is last year's wishlist post. I could repeat them here, because most of them are still open, but I will just point you in their direction, and put new wishes here.

1) Someone with vid-fu: I feel that Bird on a Wire is a very fitting song for Severus Snape. Someone make a vid based on this, please?

2) If nobody can bear the idea of making podfic of my work, then perhaps podficcers might like to make podfic of my favourite stories by other people.

3) Fic for me! See my Generic Ficathon Elaboration post (on DW) (on LJ) for my preferences. Surprise me!

4) Recs! Particularly for (a) Sunshine fic (I've read everything I could find on AO3); (b) Harry Potter: Snape + Harry gen fics, particularly featuring reconciliation, friendship, mentorship; (c) Labyrinth fic which isn't just schmoopy romance; (d) Tin Man fic which isn't just schmoopy romance; (d) crossovers in fandoms I know.

If you want to know if I've already read something, you can check out my net-fic reviews site and/or my pinboard (these overlap but aren't exactly the same).

Day 3

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Some of you have been checking out other participant's recs and self-recs from the Day 1 and Day 2 posts. If you've interacted with anyone new, you can absolutely count that for Day 3!

And indeed, I have interacted with folks Day 1 and Day 2 posts, as I went through discovering some cool recs.

http://baranduin.dreamwidth.org/1156308.html (Tolkien fan)

I'm pondering whether to friend anyone, but inclined not to, since I've added a bunch of new peeps in the last year due to the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_exchange and [livejournal.com profile] sshg_newbies (waves to my SSHG friends).

(In other news, I'm awaiting the repairman to fix my one-room air conditioner... on a day which has a predicted top of 41C! I booked the repairman last week, today was the soonest one could come. And not a moment too soon!)

Day 2
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Remember that by fanwork, we are talking about: all forms of creativity. From meta to fic writing to picspamming to hosting a comment-fic-meme to running a challenge, to vidding and podficcing and reccing and pretty much anything you can think of. Crafts, knitted items, repurposed rubber duckies, finger puppets. Pimping posts. Guides to timelines, tattoos, quotes, nit-picky canon guides, episode recaps, synopses, beta work. If you think it's creative, then it definitely fits under the heading "fanwork."

Last year, I did a variety of recs.

This time around I'm going to go for "fanworks other than stories".
here be recs! )
kerravonsen: Disney-ish princess, in purple (me-princess)
Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Remember that we're using the term fanwork in the broadest sense of the word here - things like episode guides, meta, canon timelines, thematic lists, recs, fandom overviews, picspams, discussion posts, etc totally count.

I don't want to do the same recs as I did last year, so I won't.

I would like to put "the work I did for the 2012 SSHG Exchange" in this list, but since the reveals haven't happened yet, I can't. Suffice to say, it was a creative challenge, and I'm very pleased with the result, even though I can't yet point to it and say "I made this!"

So, on to the recs I can actually make.
cut for space )
kerravonsen: Jo Grant smiling and holding up set of keys: "not a dumb blonde" (Jo Grant)
Day 12
In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

If at all possible, try to pick a smaller or rarer fandom, one that maybe doesn't have the following you feel it should. Small fandoms need love, too, right?

One of the frustrating things about going over old net-fic recs is discovering that the story you loved is no longer on the internet. I had a few different stories I wanted to rec for this day, such as "Path of Strangers" by Olwyn Mitchell, only to discover that they no longer exist. 8-(

So I think I'll link to Jeri Massi's Third Doctor stories instead. Yes, Doctor Who isn't exactly a small fandom, but it has such a huge canon that people tend to stick to particular sections of it, such as particular versions of the Doctor... and the Third Doctor doesn't get much love. Jeri Massi managed to singlehandedly change my mind about the Third Doctor, changing my attitude from "meh" to great affection.

So I invite you to read, and change your minds too.

(and, regarding my previous post - nobody has recs for me?)
kerravonsen: (spiral)
Day 11
In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some." Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Remember that your rec list doesn’t have to be fic if that’s not what you’re looking for. Some of you might be yearning for good vid recs or fanart or fanmixes or meta or... well, you get the picture, right? ;)

I'm always looking for stories featuring psi powers, especially telepathy and/or telempathy. I don't care if the powers are based on magic or science, I just love telepathy. In any of my fandoms, whether telepathy is part of the canon landscape or not. Whether it be a major part of the universe (Tomorrow People, The Omega Factor), a minor part of the universe (Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Harry Potter, Sapphire & Steel, ST:Reboot), mentioned in passing (Stargate, Highlander, Buffy) or not really part of the universe at all (Sentinel, House, Labyrinth).

Recs, please?
(Note for folks who may have come here via the fandom-snowflake post: I don't read slash.)
kerravonsen: parchment with slowly appearing writing: "I solemnly swear I am up to no spoilers" (no-spoilers)
Day 10
In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Make a recs list, create a Fanlore page for them, link to their archives or masterlists or websites. It can be a detailed, thoughtful analysis, or a squeeful, joyful post. Or maybe a combination of the two.

It was hard to choose for this, since there are so many awesome folks in fandom. But I shall choose [livejournal.com profile] rj_anderson.

It's not just because her fanwork appears multiple times on my Best-of recs page, in more than one fandom. Though that's certainly one of the reasons. I can't remember which of her works I read first, though I think it was probably her author-created-11th-Doctor stories (taken down a while back for Reasons). Every word was polished like a jewel. And then there's "Possessions", her awesome X-Files story, which is again vivid and deep.

But I just realized, in looking back at some of my reviews of her fanwork that she's been responsible for changing my mind about characters - more than once. And one of those characters was Severus Snape, and not only that, Severus Snape in a romantic context (in her "Darkness and Light" series). Which means that she's indirectly responsible for my current love of SS/HG.

Here's to people who make us love the characters even more!

(Of course, she isn't writing much fic nowadays, because she's Gone Pro. But I don't begrudge that, because that's more awesome stuff that she's writing that I can read!)
kerravonsen: (Default)
Day 9

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

At a loss for ideas? Why not scan through the Day 7 posts and see what wishes you can fulfill? You can quick reference the Day 7 participants here and bring some joy to a fellow fan. Have fun!

If you created something for someone on Day 7, feel free to count that for Day 9 as well.

Well, since rec lists and fulfilling wishes both counts, I'll put in here the links to the wishlist answers I gave to various people...

But I sort of feel as if I didn't do anything... 8-(
I may come back to this later.
