kerravonsen: Daniel: What I see, you can't even imagine (Daniel)

Prompted by a comment in this post: Which characters do you fall for who you think you would like to meet in life and be comfortable with?

(Note that I'm treating this (and, indeed, the previous post) as "fall for" in a completely platonic way. So's we're clear, yeah?)

  • I want the 12th Doctor to be my personal university tutor. Problem is, I'd probably get dragged off on adventures and get killed. But before that, it would be awesome.
  • Faramir. Wise, faithful, overlooked, a bit of an intellectual (at least in comparison to his brother). I don't think we'd have anything in common that we could talk about, too much of a culture gap, but still...
  • Daniel Jackson. Brilliant, loyal, dead wife angst, determined, compassionate, thoughtful, totally geeky. What's not to like? We could talk about the difference between Cuneiform and Hieratic. And other stuff.
  • Cazaril (The Curse of Chalion). Intelligent, and by golly, talk about faithful! Even more, faithful suffering. That gets me right there.

I think I'll stop there. Looks like my most important criteria are intelligence, angst, and faithfulness. Which probably means that Rory Williams should get an honourable mention.

What a fascinating exersize. So what would your answer to that question be?

The theme for this quarter's M.A.I.L. contest was "Storytelling", which I would not have entered (as per my New Year's Resolution) if I hadn't already had an idea for a "storytelling" necklace which I'd intended to make out of wirework, but realized it would actually work better as maille. So it was just an opportunity to do something I already wanted to do, so it doesn't count in the "no voluntary deadlines" thing. Particularly since I kept on telling myself that if I didn't finish it, so what? But I did finish it, and today I photographed it, and posted my entry to the forum.

The Nine Walkers

Rather than repeat myself, here's a link to my entry post. Hopefully that explains the design...

Of course, I'm now at the stage where I hate it and think it is awful, but I entered it anyway.

Someone pointed me towards [livejournal.com profile] b2mem (Back To Middle Earth Month) and even though it is near the end of the month, they aren't strict about things being finished by the end of the month (they're aware that some things take quite a while to create).

And I am eyeing a particular prompt; Faramir's wedding gift for Eowyn. Naturally, with my inclinations, I would want to make the wedding gift in question. But what should I make? Would a necklace -- however well-designed -- be good enough for such a gift? Or too small and trivial?

WHAT COULD I MAKE THAT WOULD BE FITTING?

Please, give me ideas.

I don't have an icon of Bilbo, so Frodo will have to do.

Twelve people, we saw it: me, two brothers, two sisters-in-law, three nieces, three nephews, and a girlfriend.

Very visual and action-packed, it was. But I could understand why Jackson put in so many (extra) action scenes - because they looked cool. And extra characters. And known characters that logically would have been behind the scenes got scenes... such as Thranduil and Legolas.

I had no idea that Eldest Niece was so into Orlando Bloom/Legolas. You learn something new every day...

Let's see, here's a bit of a who's-who: Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellan(*), Sylvester McCoy, Martin Freeman (he really was so very good as Bilbo), and unexpected Stephen Fry.

Oh, and apparently Benedict Cumberbatch was the voice of Smaug. I hadn't realized that. Obviously I've been avoiding the discussions... though I do now vaguely remember someone mentioning that he was Smaug. Anyway, Smaug was very well done too. The whole scene between Bilbo and Smaug... yes.

There was an argument discussion in the parking lot afterwards about the supremeness (or not) of Legolas, in which it had to be pointed out that Kili was definitely the cutest dwarf.

(*) We'd had an interesting incident yesterday where we started watching the Anthony Andrews version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, and then when Chauvelin turned up, we were all saying My Goodness, it's Ian McKellan! Looking so young and sexy! Didn't help that he was handsomer than the hero, and Eldest Niece found it rather disturbing that the only character she found attractive was the villain... and that it was Gandalf, too.

So we stopped the tape and watched the Richard E Grant version instead. I'd forgotten how much better that version was; more subtle and more witty.

Okay, so I've been following Mark Reads The Lord of the Rings since a few people mentioned it. (And what fun it has been) He's just read The Two Towers Chapter 8, in which one of the things that happens is that Legolas and Gimli promise to go on a road trip if they both survive the events to come.

So... has anyone written fanfic of that road trip? Good and not slash fanfic?

[livejournal.com profile] izhilzha would be pleased at our Children's Talk this morning at church: it was a potted summary of the Lord of the Rings, and why Sam was the real hero. (grin) I think the connection between it and the sermon (which was about Daniel) was the question of being faithful and loyal and doing what is right.

Further musings, sort of sparked by the sermon, but only tangengially...

One of the things we discussed during dinner last night was The Lord of the Rings movies, specifically what were our favourite scenes, unfavourite scenes and favourite additions, in Return of the King and the three movies as a whole. This is what I can remember...
