kerravonsen: Three camels with riders: WISE MEN still seek Him (wise-men-seek-him)
So.
Today was Boxing Day. This year my family had decided to spread the Christmas celebration over two days, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Christmas Day was purely for food and talk. Boxing Day was for presents and games. And quite a few of the presents turned out to be games. Ah, my family. My eldest brother is so enamoured of Terraforming Mars that he keeps on buying me extensions for it.

And my slightly-improved-recipe Christmas Pudding Ice Cream (must update the recipe on the website) was a hit, yay.

So the new game I played was Azul, which was rather different from any other game I'd played. In a way, it's like a puzzle game where you try to maximize your points, but you're also playing with other people, and that can affect what resources you can use, because someone else may have picked them up first. So I played two games of that, then I went out to the veranda/deck (this was my eldest brother's place, they usually host family gatherings) to see what the other groups of people were doing. There were four groups of games going at once, two inside, and two outside on the veranda (it's a big deck kind of veranda, with room for a barbeque and a couple of tables... and a hammock). One group were playing Munchkin, and the other were playing Terraforming Mars. I sat down looking at the Terraforming Mars folks for a bit, but then I noticed the hammock and thought it would be nice to relax in.

Bad move. )

This time of year, there's a lot of argument about the "real" meaning of Christmas. And other times of year, there are arguments about other festivals and about the "real" meaning of symbols, such as the rainbow. It tends to boil down to two main arguments:

  1. the earliest meaning is the original, it got in first, so that is the only legitimate meaning.
  2. the latest meaning is what it evolved into, that's what it means now, how dare you tell me it can't mean what it means.

It is just as legitimate (or illegitimate) for the LBGT crowd to co-opt the rainbow as their symbol, as it was for the Celtic Christians to co-opt the Triquetra Celtic knot as the symbol of the Holy Trinity. You can't have it both ways. Either the earlier meaning is the only legitimate one, or the later meaning is the only legitimate one -- if one uses the oldness/newness of the meaning as the argument for its legitimacy. People who declare that Christmas is "really a Pagan holiday" (and that the Triquetra symbol "really" is about the Threefold Goddess) can't then turn around and try to argue that, somehow, the "oldness" argument doesn't apply to the symbolism of the rainbow as a promise of God to Noah after the Flood, since Noah predates the LGBT movement by, er, thousands of years. But they still want to have it both ways.

Of course, what they really want is to control the discourse in their favour.

So, please, none of these silly arguments about what a symbol or festival "really" means. All you can be really sure of is what it means to YOU.

There is no "real" meaning. There is ALL the meanings. Pick one. Pick several!

I'm not saying that symbols are meaningless or arbitrary. Far from it! That would be like saying that art or poetry are meaningless or arbitrary in their meaning. Nor am I saying that the meanings of symbols shouldn't be discussed. But let us use these discussions to enlighten each other, not quarrel with each other. Peace.

Why? Because if you want to give someone one of my FABULOUS art prints, you have very little time left to order, if you are outside Australia and you want it to arrive before Christmas. Other items have more leeway, but the deadline for art prints is fast approaching! This is because, even though shipping overseas can take as little as two weeks, it can take a lot longer, and the art-prints have to be printed by my printer before they can be posted. Note that the later you leave it, the more likely the post will take longer to arrive, because everything goes crazy in the lead up to Christmas.

ART PRINTS - these are made to order, so they need extra lead time.
Australia: before 16th November 2018
Rest of the World: before 16th October 2018

Note that canvas prints have FREE SHIPPING within Australia!
And paper prints have flat-rate shipping everywhere; you can order as many paper prints as you want and the postage will be the same.

EVERYTHING ELSE - these are ready to ship
Australia: before 1st December 2018
Rest of the World: before 1st November 2018

This year, Christmas in Canberra at my sister's place. We celebrated Christmas over two days (Christmas Day and Boxing Day) because two members of the family were driving up on Christmas Day. So Christmas Day, those who were awake early enough went to church, then we had a delicious cold lunch (twice-baked ham, Moreton Bay Bugs, Tiger Prawns, three different salads, bread rolls, fruit punch) followed by Proper Traditional Christmas Pudding Made To A Family Recipe (by brother-in-law to his mother's recipe) with all the trimmings (ice cream, custard, cream, Hard Sauce).

Then there were games; in my case, Puerto Rico.

Then Boxing Day; a quiet morning, and then the Traditional Hot Christmas Dinner. The weather was cooperative with a cool change and rain. Turkey, potatoes, pumpkin, peas, carrots, gravy, all very traditional. And yummy. Though I suppose the purple carrots weren't very traditional. 8-) There were party hats (which I was commissioned to decorate with a sparse number of sticker) and home-made "Christmas Crackers". The crackers didn't crack, but they did have "popper" things in them. The "fortunes" were all quotes from The Lord of the Rings, and there was a dispute about the exact wording for one of them - ah, we're all nerds.

Well, to be precise, he was born, and we are celebrating the annual reminder of his birth. I do not say "anniversary", since Christ's "birthday" is as about as accurate as the Queen's Birthday in denoting when said person was actually born. Because, let's face it, the shepherds would not be in the fields at night when it was winter time. So Jesus was probably born in April or something like that.

Doubly confusing, of course, is being in the Southern Hemisphere when this hybrid festival was conceived of as a winter-solstice sort of thing, though why it isn't on the actual solstice I can only surmise occurred through calendar drift or the like.

The forecast top for today is 31C. But there is Christmas Pudding Ice Cream in my freezer. Which will be eaten instead of brandy-blazing Christmas Pudding. There's brandy in the ice cream, anyway. I'm very proud of my Christmas Pudding Ice Cream, since I invented the recipe. It really does taste like Christmas Pudding in ice cream form. 8-)

Boxing Day

This year, the family did the family present opening on Boxing Day, midmorning until lunchtime. We had cold meat (left over from previous day's roasts) and salad, and then The Pudding, including my Christmas Pudding Ice Cream, which went over well. The Puddings themselves had been cooked by brother-in-law in the Proper Way Learned From His Mother, back in Canberra before they came down, and then re-heated when it came to eating time.

It was a bit of an endurance test for me, because while my brain wasn't spinning at half-speed like yesterday, I was SO TIRED that I wanted to go home and go to sleep even before we had lunch. As it was, when we finally finished lunch and I went home, I was so fuddled with tiredness, I went to sleep with my glasses on, though didn't realize that until I woke up three hours later.

But before lunch there were presents )
I did go rather mad with crochet this year.

THANK YOU to [livejournal.com profile] reynardo for the Christmas card (featuring Severus and Lucius and a ... rhyme) which was delightful. Thank you!

Also, Youngest Niece is staying with me as part of the Family Christmas migration. There was much shuffling around as we discovered there had been a communication breakdown as to who was staying where, but it's all sorted now.

My holiday starts tomorrow.

I've finally got around to posting my Christmas Pudding Ice Cream recipe on my website: http://www.katspace.org/gusto/recipes/Christmas_Pudding_Ice_Cream/

I've made it on previous Christmases, and my family seemed to like it. There are two kinds of "Christmas Pudding Ice Cream" that I've come across: one is where one takes vanilla ice cream and mixes in pieces of Christmas Pudding (and/or dried fruit) and re-freezes it. That's the most common kind. The other kind is where one makes the ice-cream oneself, with an ice-cream maker. My recipe is the latter kind. It was based on a recipe I found on the net (which has since vanished) but I tweaked it quite a bit.

My secret ingredient? Oats. Pureed and soaked and pureed again, one gets a thick and creamy "goop" which gives the ice cream a pudding/cake undertone. The yoghurt lightens that up again. And of course the dried fruit and brandy and honey and spices give it the delicous flavours.

You know what's nifty? Three of the books I gave my neiflings for presents were written by friends of mine. Isn't it awesome? I personally know authors good enough to give their books as presents!

The authors in question were:
Anne Hamilton - "The Many-Coloured Realm" (given to niece)
[livejournal.com profile] rj_anderson - "Rebel" (given to same niece, who, on seeing it, said "Is Arrow out yet?" to which I answered "No, but I have it on pre-order")
[livejournal.com profile] altariel - "The King's Dragon" (given to nephew who loves Doctor Who)

Our family decided this year, that since we're all here for this Christmas, that we would have the general present-giving on Christmas Eve afternoon, rather than Christmas day. We had afternoon tea (or was it a light feast? Or afternoon dessert?) after the presents, a spread of lovely fruit, some frozen yoghurt, and my Christmas pudding ice cream, which had been suggested to have today rather than tomorrow, because (a) people would be too full tomorrow to enjoy it and (b) it would go well with the fruit (which it did).

For those who are curious, and so that I have a record, this is what I got:
