Author influence meme from various people:

Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen authors (poets [and comic book authors] included)* who've influenced you and that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes.
author, author! )
Of course, if I'd taken more than fifteen minutes, or actually perused my bookshelves, I would probably have given different answers.

I finished reading [livejournal.com profile] rj_anderson's "Rebel" today. It was good.

Hello, My Name Is Kathryn, and I am a bookaholic.

I have just been updating my "to read" list (with my new system, using taskwarrior). There are 229 unread books on the list, though some of them are re-reads, and there are probably a number of non-fiction books that haven't been added. But that's not the half of it, not even a quarter of it. My net-fic wiki informs me that there are 428 fanfic stories I haven't read yet, and that there are 429 e-books I haven't read yet.

I could get really depressed about that. I shall just have to be even more ruthless in dropping books/stories when they don't hold my interest. But it does make it hard to decide what to read next.

However, speaking of books, I really must rec Many-Coloured Realm which I just finished reading. Or, technically, re-reading, since I had read (a version of it) many years ago. Still just as good. Many hidden gems inside it.
kerravonsen: rainbow sparkles: "Squee!" (squee!)
My copy of "Mouse and Dragon" arrived on Wednesday.
My copy of "The Many-Coloured Realm" arrived today.
There is a long weekend coming up.
But that still isn't enough time to read both of them.

WHICH ONE AM I GOING TO READ FIRST? (Aiiie)

But there is still much squee going on in this household for the lovely, lovely books.
kerravonsen: Sarah Williams, the book of the Labyrinth: "imagine" (imagine)
I got a letter this week, which had me bursting with squee.

A fantasy novel I had read an early draft of many years ago, a novel I utterly adored, a novel I dared not hope would ever be published... has been published.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Ahem)

The author is Annie Hamilton, long-time friend of mine, who taught me huge amounts about writing and editing, back in the day.

The story itself, which I read when it was titled "Tumbl'tower", might, at first glance, seem to be just another of the ten million children's fantasy novels around - it's got goblins and elves and magic, and human protagonists on a quest through a fantastical land - but there are places where it subverts the tropes, and others where it introduces things that are completely new. There are characters I loved, and a sort of mythic depth to it - you feel as if the Realm is old, with layers of history in it, not just a clone of modern Europe with magic-technology slapped on the top of it.

And, as the author points out on the site, there isn't a map. (grin)

I promised [livejournal.com profile] lizbee that I would make a list of good/classic/popular SF authors and books after consulting my bookshelves, and so here it is. Not that I consider it exhaustive or definitive or anything, but, well, it's a starting point, anyway.
(I meant to post this a couple of weeks ago, but then my computer went kaboom and I forgot.)

The Quill of the Gods

The Hammer of the Carpenter

Mouse Quest

The Forge of Goodness

The Way of Light

The Shadow of Remaking

One where, instead of Mary-Sue American going into a fantasy world and having an unexpected Talent for Magic, we have Our Heroine coming from a fantasy world and having an unexpected Talent for... um... pistol-shooting? (I was tempted to say "computer programming" but that's not something that one picks up in ten minutes like they seem to need to if they're Saving The World).

I have just finished reading Knife by [livejournal.com profile] rj_anderson! It got to the point where it was un-put-downable; I've been reading non-stop since lunchtime, because I didn't want to stop. And me having read an earlier draft, too! But a number of things about the plot worked much better this time around. And of course RJA knows how to write.

I have to rave on about the trilogy I just finished reading, the "Novels of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman" by Pamela Aidan. The three books re-tell the events of "Pride and Prejudice" from Darcy's point of view. And it works, it really works. I especially loved the third book, where the events come to a head.

1) An Assembly Such As This
2) Duty and Desire
3) These Three Remain

The person at work (S) who loaned me the "Order of the Phoenix" DVD really likes Harry Potter (has read all the books at least twice). She hates the Narnia stories (only got half way through "The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe" before she gave up because she felt she was being hit over the head with the Bible). She's just started His Dark Materials trilogy. I've just made her some recs, but I'd be interested in more. She said it isn't so much that she's interested in Fantasy as such, but the things that she loved about Harry Potter were the characterisation and the themes.

So this is what I recced to her:
- The Curse of Chalion (Lois McMaster Bujold) and the other Chalion books
- Sandman (Neil Gaiman)
- the Sime~Gen series
- Doctor Who (though she's mainly looking for book recs)

She also indicated an interest in good Star Wars books, but I couldn't help there, not really being that into Star Wars myself.

So, folks, have you got any book recs, for stuff which is thematically positive with memorable characters?

I've just discovered that Doris Egan [the Ivory books] (aka Jane Emerson [City of Diamond]) has an LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tightropegirl.

I started off looking to see if "Flatland" was at Project Gutenberg (because someone on my flist mentioned it) and ended up burning for myself the Project Gutenberg Science Fiction Bookshelf CD! Nifty!

I also downloaded and burned the Project Gutenberg July 2006 DVD, but it isn't as convenient, since all the files are zipped, whereas the SF CD is all ready for browsing.

And, yes, "Flatland" is on the CD.

In other news, my sister-in-law helped me go furniture shopping. IKEA. I think I'm supposed to hang my head in shame for being so plebeian, but considering that a number of my bookshelves were bought from the Reject Shop, I don't really care. The actual item is still in S-I-L's car, since they were going to get a trolly to help carry it in, and since they haven't arrived, I'm hoping they'll do it tomorrow. So I'll hopefully be angsting over allan keys (how do you spell that thing?) tomorrow.

I would like to get my father a book or two for his birthday, but I don't really know what he would like. I know that he enjoys the following:
- P.G. Wodehouse
- J.R.R. Tolkien
- Sherlock Holmes stories

I don't think he would like Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett, though, because they are too cynical. With Wodehouse, he enjoys not just the humour but the wordsmithing.

Oh flist, do you have wisdom to share?

Memed from [livejournal.com profile] vilakins; a number of these I would have recced myself, if they hadn't already been recced.

Once the shock of reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for the fifth time in a row wears off, some readers may be wondering what they can read next. So why not start a meme of suggestions?

Copy and paste the directions and the list so far, and then add three (and only three) new fantasy or SF books to the top of the list that that those who enjoyed Harry Potter may also enjoy. Label the books as either YA (young adult, suitable for the younger fans of Harry Potter) or A (adult, suitable for the not-so-younger fans of Harry Potter). It will be understood that anything labelled YA is also recommended for A.

kerravonsen: Snape: Anti-hero (Snape-anti-hero)
I have now finished "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". So out from my spoiler-free bunker I come.

General non-spoilery reaction... I started off reading this as a chore. Because everyone else was, and I hate spoilers and everything. There were bits I skimmed over quickly. But still, by the time I was about half way, I had got caught up in the story (though there were still bits I skimmed over). And by the time I got to the end, I was liking it. Whereas I gather that a number of people felt rather ambivalent about it. Perhaps because there was very little I was hoping for, and the little I was hoping for, I got, rather than many people who'd been building up and up and anticipating stuff that they didn't get, I enjoyed it more than I might have otherwise.

here be crumple-horned spoilers! )
Let the AUs commence!

Now I'm going to read everyone else's reactions.
