The Joy of a Mad God

God's Grandmother

The Quill of the Gods

The Hammer of the Carpenter

Mouse Quest

The Forge of Goodness

The Way of Light

The Shadow of Remaking

One where, instead of Mary-Sue American going into a fantasy world and having an unexpected Talent for Magic, we have Our Heroine coming from a fantasy world and having an unexpected Talent for... um... pistol-shooting? (I was tempted to say "computer programming" but that's not something that one picks up in ten minutes like they seem to need to if they're Saving The World).

Or an unexpected turn for bureaucratic paper-pushing :)

Who knows, perhaps she comes from a religious sect that follow the ancient wisdom of Torvolds contained in the 'man' scrolls(Ver 2.453) that are housed in the holy city of lib(second only to root)

Cooking? The violin? Those could be pre-existing skills, but I'm not sure how you'd save the world with them.

Guh, everything anyone's actually good at, we know it takes years to be great.

But... what if she has skills that are fairly mundane in a fantasy world, but lost in our modern age, like herbalism or such? That could work.

Of course! It's my secret power! Well, not all that secret.

I had to take the photo specially, I couldn't find anything suitable online.

IIRC, the hero of books 6 to 10 of Roger Zelazny's Amber series works as a computer programmer when in our would, but unfortunately we never actually get to see him doing any programming. However an AI artifact that he created plays quite an important role.

William Gibson and Bruce Sterling's "The Difference Engine" featured Ada Lovelace, as you probably know, the first programmer of all. I thought I'd really enjoy that book, but found that I couldn't get into it.

Considering the current economic climate an unexpected ability for business or management might be more useful for saving the world.
So imagine a Princess really getting an opportunity for world domination. Not by might but the pen!
