Date: 2015-05-18 03:30 pm (UTC)And I also love my cast iron: I have a set (two skillets and a flat grill) inherited from my late mother-in-law, who inherited it from her mother who inherited it from her mother-in-law, which makes it at the very least a hundred and fifteen years old. It is sturdy and smoother than modern "non-stick" surfaces, and true to her teaching I never touch it with detergent or scrubbers. I use it a LOT!
There was a third skillet, but my sister-in-law got that one, and then it was lost in Hurricane Katrina.

Date: 2015-05-18 08:14 pm (UTC)We had a cast-iron frying pan - which I expect my father still has - and it was awesome for cooking with. The whole thing was cast iron, including the handle. Heavy as heck, but you're right, it's so much better than these modern non-stick pans.

Date: 2015-05-19 02:15 am (UTC)I don't actually know.
I mean, I'm sure we mine our own iron, but I don't know if the actual cast iron implements were made here.
I think it would be extremely unlikely they would be imported from New Zealand, though.
