The way to learn to read music is to buy a children's recorder book. Recorders are cheap and there's some really easy starter books. I taught myself that way.

Plus, recorders don't need tuning (always a bouus) and fit easily in suitcases.

Other useful instruments are things like concertinas where you just have to push a button and remember which dot on the paper is which button.

Things like violins are just plain difficult.

Honestly, I don't wish to spare the time. I did actually learn (a) the piano, (b) the violin and (c) the recorder when I was a kid, but I chose not to continue with them, and my music reading skills have thus atrophied.
I have more things to do than I can manage now, I don't think I want to add a musical instrument to the unmanageable mix. I don't even have time to make costumes!
