fail, webhost, fail
Jun. 12th, 2008 08:20 amI just found out that my domain katspace.net has been lost to me. I thought I'd renewed it in time last year, but yesterday when I was googling something, and found a link to my old site on katspace.net, I got a strange "search" page. This morning I checked, and it is owned by someone in Russia until 2009! They bought it in March. 8-( I hadn't noticed, because that site I've left as a sort of placeholder, with my old webhost, because I'm serving the "real" site, katspace.org, from my own server. But I thought I'd keep it around "just in case". But it's gone, and it's been gone for almost six months, and yet google is still pointing to it. What gives?
Now I'm not sure what to do.
a) Buy another domain, and put up a "mirror" site on my old webhost (because their servers are more reliable than my own machine).
b) Nothing; let my webhost account expire.
c) Something else?

Date: 2008-06-11 11:17 pm (UTC)Yes. I got an A+ Eternal account with them, which was one where you paid a large amount up front, and then it's only US$25 a year after that. So I've kept it up.
They did tell me when my domain was in danger of expiring, I just thought I had paid in time, but something obviously ganged agley.

I do not know if I could set up an automatic failover, though I have a vague idea that something might be possible with my dyndns.org setup (I have my katspace.org domain with them)

Serverpoint don't do .org.au domains, just .org and .org.uk domains. I was thinking maybe kat-space.org, which seems to be available.

Date: 2008-06-12 12:51 am (UTC)It was originally my primary site, and katspace.com and katspace.org redirected to katspace.net. Then I set up katspace.org as my primary site, running on my own server at home. The katspace.net site stayed around, out of date, for a while, then I changed the home page to say "please go to katspace.org", because I hadn't decided whether or not I was going to use katspace.net as a backup or not.
Part of the reason I wanted to use my own server was because I had more control, I could configure the server the way I wanted it, use Apache features which I couldn't use with my webhost (because they don't use Apache, they use Zeus). So if I was going to use it as a backup mirror, I'd probably have to do something like make a full copy of my site as static pages and copy them to the webhost, and that was kind of a bother to set up, so I never got around to it.
Even though I've changed my setup since then, it would still probably be simplest to make the Serverpoint site a static mirror, so it would still have to be set up somehow.
As for automatic redirect, I think it's a bit more tricky when one has the situation of "go to machine A normally, but if you can't contact machine A, go to machine B" as distinct from "always go to machine B". I'd have to investigate if/how it could be done.
