I hereby poke my tongue out at [livejournal.com profile] mistraltoes, since (a) it's her fault I'm doing this and (b) she obviously isn't reading this.

Research has shown that most blogs die before the year is out, I expect this one is likely to be in the majority.

I actually expected mine to last about three weeks, if that. But I think I'm catching on to the secret of keeping the blog going, and that's to establish (a) a purpose in blogging and (b) a community to interact with. I think LJ users have an advantage in the latter, when contrasted with people who just blog on their own site. And I quite like the ability to get a more rounded view of people with whom the conversation is usually restricted to just whichever one topic the mailing list you met them on revolves around. It's a little more personal than those annoying Christmas newsletters without taking quite as much effort as keeping up two dozen private e-mail conversations; and of course you can still have e-mail conversations with the people you want to really know well.

I expected when I started my blog that it wouldn't last a month, but two years later I'm still blogging and I've been on LJ for a year as well. If anything my LJ tends to get a bit more attention, since it's my "non-serious" forum and I can just blather about whatever, whenever.

LJ especially is addictive, because of the way Comments are structured to encourage discussion, and because of the Friendslist, which generates spin-off topics almost endlessly.
