1. Blake's 7 - Avon : because he's intelligent, witty, ambiguous and Suffers Beautifully
2. Doctor Who - 5th Doctor (or 8th Doctor, actually) : empathetic, caring, the most human one, heroic, vulnerable
3. Stargate-SG1 - Daniel : intelligent, caring, intellectual, curious, sympathetic
4. Highlander - Methos : intelligent, subtle, witty, hidden depths, ambiguous
5. Sentinel - Jim : tough on the outside, vulnerable on the inside
6. Tomorrow People (New Series) Yes, Adam was one, because he's nice and sort of introspective, yet still manages to command the others' respect.
7. Tomorrow People (Old Series)
8. Space Above and Beyond - McQueen : charisma, loyalty, thoughtful, intelligent. And, gosh darn it, he's a poet as well!
9. Buffy - Giles : intelligent, hidden depths, another intellectual!
10. UFO - Straker : intelligent, suffers beautifully -- not as beautifully as Avon, but he's again one of these fellows with the outer coolness who has on more than one occassion had to go through the emotional wringer in the course of events -- and he has on more than one occassion reasoned his way out of dire straits

I suspect the more obscure shows will be impossible to guess for many people, but there are others here which will be bleedin' obvious.

Well, I didn't find some of those all that obvious. I wasn't at all sure about Daniel (because you have Carter on your icon), and only guessed the Fifth Doctor because of Alternative Escape. I should have remembered that you like the Eighth.

Well, I meant more "obvious" as in "well-known fandoms", really.

I do like Carter, though she's in my "geek" icon because she's more of a geek than Daniel.
I'd probably say I like them in this order:
Daniel, Jack, Carter, Teal'c -- with Daniel, Jack and Carter very close, and Teal'c not so close, but probably more because he's hard to write well.

As for Foster, Nathan was too much of a conventional hero, I think. I mean, he was set up with the right amount of angst and nobility and all, but... (shrug)
Maybe I felt as if the audience was being manipulated to like him, and I hate being manipulated.
