Doctor Who 7x04: The Power of Three
Sep. 29th, 2012 09:57 pmNice, but somewhat unsatisfactory. Someone on my flist said it had the feel of a Sarah-Jane Adventures story, and I agree.
The ending was too easy, too pat. After an entire episode where everyone is one step behind the Mysterious Cubes... the Doctor just waves his sonic screwdriver and not only is the invasion/extermination stopped, but all the dead people are revived, and get up like nothing happened. Excuse me?
Plus the Doctor spent all this time trying to persuade the bad guy to change his mind, and then it turns out that he was just an AI who could be ignored. Or something. (scratches head)
Also, the emotional arc of the episode was wrapped up too easily, too.
Here we have Amy and Rory being torn between real life and life with the Doctor, angsting about having to choose between them... and in the end, they just decide not to decide. (sigh)
Though I suppose it was still an interesting exploration of that dilemma; at least some valid points were brought up, and there were good emotional bits:
- Brian asking the Doctor what happened to the others
- the Doctor's conversation with Amy about running away and running towards, and "you were the first face that this face saw".
The whole bit where the Doctor took Amy and Rory away to celebrate their anniversary; Brian saying "how long were they gone?"
"Er... seven weeks."
Loved the bit at the start where Brian listed all the possible things the cubes might be. Thus speaks an experienced Companion! Wish we could see some of his adventures. Is there any Brian fic?
The idea of "the slow invasion" was a good one. Arrive, lull people into a false sense of security by doing absolutely nothing for months, allowing human curiosity to do your work for you. Then wake up, scan everything, and become dormant again. Then decide on your extermination plan, and proceed.
Mind you, the technology required was on the "indistinguishable from magic" level. Pretty cool, though.
Was there actually any real significance to the number seven after all that fuss?
And why were the fake orderlies kidnapping people? I mean, they had all these people laid out on slabs... for no apparent reason.
The meaning of the title was a bit of a let-down too. It was nice, it was twee, it was a good sound bite... and it didn't have any relevance to the plot. Or not much.

I suppose you could have too much danger and excitement and hanker after peace and quiet.
I was WTF! when everyone got up again. I'm thinking what about their brains being starved of oxygen when the heart stopped.
