Cowboys and aliens and cyborgs, oh my!

See, I'm catching up.

Well, well, well. Ben Browder. I have been avoiding spoilers, including casting spoilers, so it took me a little while to figure out why the Marshall seemed so familiar.

And here's another episode where the Doctor is not famous.

This episode surprised me, because it contained a moral dilemma that didn't have an obvious or simple solution.

"But they keep coming back, don't you see? Every time I negotiate, I try to understand. Well not today. No, today I honour the victims first. His, The Master's, the Daleks'. All the people that died because of my mercy!"

Well, I wouldn't actually include the Daleks in that list. Unless he's feeling guilty for not having destroyed them in Genesis of the Daleks.

But personally, I think Dumbledore is worse in the "mercy" department; his mercy really is the kind where he gives one more chance and one more chance for the evil ones to repent, and the bodies keep piling up.

"You committed an atrocity and choose this for your punishment. Don't get me wrong—good choice. Civilized hours, lots of adulation, nice weather. But—but! Justice doesn't work like that. You don't get to decide when and how your debt is paid!"

True, because the victims are the only ones who can declare the debt paid.
There's only one way to ensure that such a debt is paid beyond question, and that's to give a life for a life; for one only has one life to give, one can't give anything more than that.
Which is what Kahler-Jex chose in the end.

And that's the difference between paying a tiend to hell, and a man laying down his life for a friend.

Here's some fun quotes:

"Anachronistic electricity. Keep Out signs. Aggressive stares. Has someone been peeking at my Christmas list?"

"Tea. But the strong stuff. Leave the bag in."

Isaac: Says he wants us to give him the alien doctor.
Amy: But that's you? Why would he want to kill you? Unless he's met you.

"The Kahler! I love the Kahler! They're one of the most ingenious races in the galaxy. Seriously, they could build a spaceship out of Tupperware and moss."

"Thank you for choosing Abaraxas security software. Incinerating intruders for three centuries."

"Everyone who isn't an American, drop your gun."

"Tea. But the strong stuff. Leave the bag in."

Now I think of it, that must have puzzled them since they didn't have bags back then.
