Where Is All The Podfic?

Gah! I've been looking through the
amplificathon archives - why is 90% of podfic slash? (!!!???) I'm currently on "skip=100" on the "archived" tag and I have found three stories which aren't slash, in fandoms I know. Four if you count the one which I already got from elsewhere.
All the Sherlock podfic there is John/Sherlock.
All the ST:Reboot podfic there is Jim/Spock.
All the Harry Potter podfic there is either Harry/Draco or Harry/Snape.
Then we have the huge amount of Supernatural slash. And the Avengers slash. And the Merlin slash. And the Inception slash. And the RPF slash. And the fandoms-I'd-never-heard-of-before slash (e.g. Teen Wolf). And of course the one single Man From UNCLE story was... slash.
Oh, I think there was one Magnificent 7 gen story. And, astonishingly, one Supernatural gen story. But I don't follow Mag7 or SPN.
(sigh)
Maybe I need to learn how to make podfic. But I have so many other things I want to do instead. (sigh)

Date: 2012-06-29 12:32 pm (UTC)It depends on the fandom. Supernatural has a community (http://spn-gen-podfics.livejournal.com/) for gen podfic.
The audiofic archive lists gen with a separate tag, so:
http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/category/sherlock-bbcgen
http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/category/fandomcriminal-minds/criminal-mindsgen
http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/category/fandomsupernatural/supernaturalgen
and so on.
Here is one Mag7 story (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/1460117.html) not sure if it's the one that you found; some Bandom/Stargate (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/1417732.html); Firefly (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/1391806.html); a mixed bag, Harry Potter, Bandom, Buffy, the Lilo&Stitch/Hawaii 5-0 one is delightful (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/1421857.html), Discworld (http://reena-jenkins.livejournal.com/), Dr Who (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/1254813.html)... I'm reccing a lot by one of my favorite readers, reena jenkins, who created a monumental and fanciful, astounding podifc compendium called The Intangible Residuum: A Collection Of Stories (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/1078262.html), many of which are gen and which are all quirky and fascinating.

Date: 2012-06-29 12:53 pm (UTC)I'm not into Criminal Minds, Supernatural, Magnificent 7, Firefly, H50, Bandom or Merlin, alas.
I trawled through the Harry Potter and Doctor Who tags at Jinjurly, but I admit I haven't looked at every single thing in other fandoms there. (Makes note to check out Sherlock gen and Stargate gen).

Dr Who (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/1254813.html)
Yep, I already got that one from elsewhere.

Alas, that collection was stored at Megaupload-that-was.

Date: 2012-06-29 05:22 pm (UTC)What is the form on making your own podfic? Do you have to ask the fic authors permission or can you just go ahead and do it? The reason I ask this is, while I'm sure it is only polite to ask, some authors have left or moved fandoms.
And then do you have to store it somewhere in particular or what? Please forgive the technoduncy questions but I am interested.

Date: 2012-06-30 12:53 am (UTC)Many authors give blanket permission to podfic their work. If they aren't on that list, you can check their profile or author page, since I doubt that list is exhaustive (e.g. I give blanket permission myself, but I'm not on that list). Otherwise, yes, it's only polite to ask. I doubt that many authors are around who are completely uncontactable.
As for where to put it, the biggest archive (possibly the ONLY archive) is http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/ and you can check out the http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/how-do-i-submit-recording page for instructions.
Yay!

Date: 2012-06-30 12:37 am (UTC)But please don't hesitate to self-rec in future! I loved your "Time's Riddle" series and I trust that anything else you write will be just as good.

There are a number of podfics on You Tube, for example:

This is the first of a series done by a member of The Yahoo Sarek/Amanda group.

It never occurred to me that people might have put podfic up on YouTube. Thank you for the pointer!
This isn't exchange related but...
