Since she can't resist digging into things, she might well be a Burrowing Owl. Though the obsession with collecting trinkets of information suggests something in the crow family. Magpies are too gaudy, so maybe Jackdaw.
I agree something in the crow family would be good (someone on my DW post suggested that). But why do you think that Magpies would be too gaudy? I don't really think of "black and white" as "gaudy". Though I suppose it's gaudy compared to brown.
The black of the wings and tail, seen under bright light, is actually irridescent shades of green, purple and bronze, so Magpies are a bit gaudy. And they're smug little buggers too. They strut. Since when did Hermione strut?
Jackdaws, by contrast, are modest and compact, yet shapely and elegant on closer inspection.
The voice fits better too. Magpies cackle. Jackdaws yap.
Too far east. Hermione lives in Britain, so if she turned into a Daurian Jackdaw she'd be hounded by thousands of twitchers trying to put her on their life list. But as an ordinary (Western ) Jackdaw she wouldn't attract the least bit of notice.
If Hermione was an bird animagus? Something bright and intelligent, naturally. My choice would be either a member of the crow family or one of the smaller falcons, a merlin or a hobby.
I'm definitely biased (considering I have a family of these wonderful birds that live on my property and that we watch via webcam during hatching season), but I think she might be a barred owl. I know a few other people suggested owls of genuses that are more appropriate, and I agree with all of them: our owls are intelligent; accepting of those who are different from them (as proven by the fact that none have tried to kill us when we help their babies who, inevitably, fall at least once from the nest); massively protective of their young; they mate for life; they're resourceful; and they like to do their own work - as in, they don't eat things that are already dead, but rather, they like to kill their own food.

So what do you think of the Daurian Jackdaw as a possibility?
