Throwing the question open to my hopefully imaginative readers: if Hermione was a bird animagus, what bird would she be?

Some kind of corvid - jay maybe? They are very clever birds. Though part of me wants to say humming bird, for some reason.

I'm thinking a Thrush - not much to look at, but sings beautifully.

My first reaction was kestrel. Which may be more influenced by reading 'A kestrel for a knave' as a child than any real though about the idea.

Since she can't resist digging into things, she might well be a Burrowing Owl. Though the obsession with collecting trinkets of information suggests something in the crow family. Magpies are too gaudy, so maybe Jackdaw.

The black of the wings and tail, seen under bright light, is actually irridescent shades of green, purple and bronze, so Magpies are a bit gaudy. And they're smug little buggers too. They strut. Since when did Hermione strut?

Jackdaws, by contrast, are modest and compact, yet shapely and elegant on closer inspection.

The voice fits better too. Magpies cackle. Jackdaws yap.

Too far east. Hermione lives in Britain, so if she turned into a Daurian Jackdaw she'd be hounded by thousands of twitchers trying to put her on their life list. But as an ordinary (Western ) Jackdaw she wouldn't attract the least bit of notice.

for pure intelligence, I'd say a Raven?

I also thought of a Raven!

Although she might deliberately choose something small and inconspicuous-- very useful for finding out things; maybe a Sparrow.

If Hermione was an bird animagus? Something bright and intelligent, naturally. My choice would be either a member of the crow family or one of the smaller falcons, a merlin or a hobby.

I'm definitely biased (considering I have a family of these wonderful birds that live on my property and that we watch via webcam during hatching season), but I think she might be a barred owl. I know a few other people suggested owls of genuses that are more appropriate, and I agree with all of them: our owls are intelligent; accepting of those who are different from them (as proven by the fact that none have tried to kill us when we help their babies who, inevitably, fall at least once from the nest); massively protective of their young; they mate for life; they're resourceful; and they like to do their own work - as in, they don't eat things that are already dead, but rather, they like to kill their own food.

Phew! Anyway, owls FTW! :D
