When you write a story, I look for expressions of friendship, and for characters who think.

Voice. As in, you get it right-- whatever canon you are writing in, if I have even the slightest familiarity with it, I recognize the characters instantly.

The very first piece of fanfic I read was one which took a series where the main characters died in the end, and took numerous bits of evidence from canon to support the interpretation that they were not dead.
So I've had "different takes on canon" in my thoughts ever since I started cutting my teeth on fanfic.
