Doctor Who 6x04: The Doctor's Wife
May. 29th, 2011 10:03 pmYes, I'm very behind.
One word: wow.
And yes, it was so very, very Neil Gaiman.
I have to say that I was afraid that the eponymous "Doctor's Wife" was going to be River Song. But the fact that it was the TARDIS is just so much very much more fitting. Perfect.
I cried when Idris/TARDIS died. Even though she wasn't really dead.
"A big complicated sad word: alive."
Creepy, steampunky shades of Frankenstein, poignant, clever, frickin' terrifying, banter with a touch of delirium (or Delirium?), a sprinkle of timey-wimeyness as Idris says things in the wrong order...
"I want my thief!"
"Do fish have fingers?"
"Borrowing something implies that one intends to give it back. And I'm never giving you back."
"I stole you."
"No, I stole you."
"You were the only one with a door open."
"I left the door open."
"I wanted to see the universe, and you were the only one mad enough to come."
"You're unreliable. You never take me where I want to go."
"No, I always take you where you need to go."
(so very very true!)
So much so much good stuff in this episode. Character-truth.
I loved the way that House was a big planet with a tiny mind, absolutely no match for the TARDIS; so much bigger on the inside.
I don't know if I would have been able to tell that the episode had been written by Neil Gaiman if I didn't know, but knowing that it was written by him, I could see all sorts of things that were classic Gaiman. The terrifying mind-games that House played with Amy and Rory, the sprinkling of archaic yet interesting words, the nuggets of oddball profundity...
"I love you."
Yes. We love you too.

I've been saying that (in different words) for a long time now.
