Actually, I got it yesterday, but today is The Day. When I came home last night, there was, in my letter-box, a parcel, wrapped in white paper all covered with crayon and pen, with "Happy Birthday" written on it multiple times, and pictures of (I think) balloons, and a picture of a cake with two candles on it, with "Aunt Kathryn" underneath. Inside was an SF novel, "Eternity Road" by Jack McDevitt, which is a double miracle, because (a) I haven't read it but (b) I have read this author before, and liked one of his novels. The blurb sounds intriguing, so this is all good. I started reading it this morning, and it continues promising.

This is a double squee, because even though I like to celebrate my birthday (with a nice meal and friends/family) I generally don't get presents (except from my parents). So I very much like the pleasant surprise itself, as well as the present.

So, you ask, who was the giver? Well, there was no label at all, so I had to apply my powers of deduction. Several clues gave it away. The wrapping indicated that it was created by a niece or nephew, probably a niece by the style. The fact that it was in my letter box but obviously not posted indicated that it had been deposited by hand. That would indicate that it was put there by someone who either lived nearby (such as my parents or aunts) or who was visiting same. These two clues indicate that it was placed there by one or other of my brothers in a collaborative effort with aforementioned niece. The fact that it was a decent SF novel would also indicate a brotherly hand. And the fact that it was given at all, since I don't usually get presents, would indicate that it was given by folks who aren't usually here, to wit, my second-eldest brother's family who are here on furlough.

And a phone-call last night confirmed my deductions. 8-)

Oh! A belated most happy birthday. Now that [livejournal.com profile] vilakins has pointed out the birthday list, perhaps next year I'll be on time with my good wishes. :) I hope the coming year brings you the fulfillment of some cherished dreams and some marvelous surprises!

A truly brilliant piece of deductive work there, Watson. :)
