I saw this today with my brother D and my youngest niece.
Given that there was a lot that I didn't like in the book, of course I would not-like those same things when they turn up in the movie; I can't really enjoy this movie as much as some of the earlier ones. I deliberately didn't re-read the book before seeing the movie, because I didn't want to spend my time comparing minute details of the book and movie.
But, while watching it, I went along for the ride (though I couldn't resist making the occasional snarky remark to my niece). It was creepy and spooky and pretty and sad and all the Disapparating made my niece jump.
Flying Snape!(*) Billowing Snape! Cold and expressionless Snape! I can't recall if the book gave us this scene at all. So that's a plus. On the downside, that was all the Snape we got.
Yes, he's my favourite character. Didn't you notice that by now?
His scene raises a question, though: where had Snape gotten his information about the plans for moving Harry? It's not as if any members of the Order would trust him... Hmmmm. It kind of makes the fanfic idea that Hermione was Snape's contact a bit more plausible.
It's interesting to note that Lucius here is, if not a broken man, one on the verge of breaking. Gone is the self-contained suave arrogance; he's just surviving.
Was that a tear I saw in Draco's eye when Bathilda Bagshot was killed?
(*) The indication seems to be that more Death Eaters than just Snape and Voldemort can fly. Oh well.
There was Luna! With good lines! ("He doesn't want to talk to us but he's too polite to say so.") And Xenophilus Lovegood! Not enough of them either, though.
But, of course, most of the time was camping, aimless wandering around, and more camping. As plans for saving the world go, it's really dumb. Oh well.
The creepiest bits were the scene with Nagini-Bathilda, and when Bellatrix was torturing Hermione and we discover that she had been carving "Mudblood" in Hermione's arm. (shiver) My niece said that she would probably have nightmares tonight. 8-(
The boys really would have been totally lost without Hermione. Totally and utterly, and probably dead. She'd been carrying around a fully stocked beaded bag for days? Talk about thinking ahead.
The portrayal of the story of the Deathly Hallows was expressive and artistic.
Oh, Dobby! It was interesting seeing both Dobby and Kreacher in the same scene; Dobby was so obviously sucking up to Harry...
I'm sorry there was less about Kreacher's change of heart, unless I'm getting confused and that doesn't happen until later.
Ah, it leaves me feeling sad, and desirous of reading AU fanfic.
