Sarah Jane Adventures, Season 4 (part 1)
Dec. 27th, 2010 09:27 pmBeen catching up on the Sarah Jane Adventures. Spoilery ramblings follow.
The Nightmare Man
The first half in particular was nicely creepy.
So, apparently we have a cast change, and Luke goes the way of Maria: we get the occasional vidphone, but most of the time they're forgotten. Clever move to get K-9 out of the way; despite my like of him, he's still a plot-device on wheels.
Though they were also clear that Luke will be back "for Christmas", so he may return every now and then.
The Vault of Secrets
The best thing about this episode was the idea that the Men In Black are actually alien androids programmed to cover up the presence of aliens on Earth. I thought it was a nice twist.
There were a number of plot holes. If one could use a transmat to get things in and out of the vault, I wouldn't exactly call it a secure vault!
And for goodness' sake, Sarah-Jane, stop being so gullible!
The Death of the Doctor
Well, of course the Doctor isn't dead. Though I think Sarah Jane should have insisted on seeing the corpse.
If I were the Doctor, considering the planet Earth my second home, I wouldn't want my corpse to be shot into space in a rocket. I'd want to be buried on Earth itself, or my ashes scattered there. Not tossed into cold and lonely space where nobody could visit my grave.
Jo Grant! (Sorry, Jo Jones) She's awesome! What fun! Yeah, we did have another round of "but you never came back" from her, but, well, it would be odd if she hadn't remarked on it. And I liked the "but you were moving around so much I could never track you down" save of Eleven.
And Eleven! He's like a primary school teacher. Except not quite as reliable.
I get the impression from both this episode and from the Christmas Special that the Doctor has been repeatedly trying and failing to get Amy and Rory to a good honeymoon spot...
I liked how Rani called Sarah-Jane on being prejudiced against the appearance of the vulture-people. And how Jo said they were lovely (and, yeah, she was saying that everyone was lovely, but she meant it, too.)
I'm not sure what to think of the "they were a renegade faction" explanation for the bad guys. I like that they're trying not to lump them all together as "ugly aliens, must be evil". That's a step up from much TV SF.
The motive of the UNIT traitor wasn't really explained; she said "there's nothing on Earth for me any more" but we weren't told anything more than that. Implication: she'd lost loved ones. Perhaps that's all we need to know.
