Random Stuff
Jul. 16th, 2010 07:28 pmI guess nobody wants to do the "Rec your own fic" meme? Would you do it if I begged nicely?
Has nobody got any fic recs for me?
Random thought: The difference between a bug-fix and a feature is that you pay extra for a feature. Which is why some of our clients try to disguise them as urgent bug-fixes.
I got a bunch of enthusiastic reviews (from one person) on http://www.fanfiction.net/~kerravonsen, so I started uploading some more of my stories. They will probably all be ignored. (Iz sad)

Date: 2010-07-16 11:00 am (UTC)RE: FF.net - I actually get as many comments there as from all other sources combined; and no trolls. The commenters skew young, but that's fine. I wouldn't say I'm part of the FF.net culture (whatever that is) but I've been happy with my experience there.
Erm, and now I see you *have* been on FF.net a while... never mind...

Date: 2010-07-16 11:17 am (UTC)I don't think I've ever been trolled or flamed about my fic anywhere. I've been flamed about other things, but not my fic. I think that the worst one can expect from FFN reviewers is not malice, but cluelessness. That, and below-minimum standards. I mean, when you get complimented on having correct spelling and grammar, you know that the competition is abysmal...
No, I take it back, I have seen someone flamed on FFN: it was a Wicca flaming a Christian author for writing from a Christian perspective. Even when the story summary warned about it. (rolls eyes)
There was also the case, for someone on my flist, who kept on being told how she was supposed to write her story. I guess that comes with the very low standards; FFN readers do not trust their authors to be competent.

The flamer probably was trolling for just that type of story. (I'm sure there's plenty going the other direction too!)

Date: 2010-07-16 02:19 pm (UTC)I do enjoy *your* recs, as I read more widely than I write. I've really been enjoying some HP AUs you recced recently.

Date: 2010-07-16 11:13 pm (UTC)Thank you! I think we all read more widely than we write, because reading is faster than writing.
Almost all my stuff is LotR, and I am not sure that you are really into that fandom.
I do occassionally dip into LOTR fic; not a lot, but sometimes.

Date: 2010-07-17 01:28 am (UTC)I also try my best to write stories that could fit with canon-- even with my AUs I try to find a canonical foundation for an AU. And with some of my stories, I try to emulate as best I can, JRRT's own style.
A couple of my stories that I think I may have succeeded in doing this with are both gapfillers for The Hobbit:
A Merry Old Inn In which 13 dwarves, a hobbit and a wizard walk into an in in Bree.
Concussion Getting knocked unconscious during the Battle of Five Armies probably saved Bilbo's life, but it also had other consequences. (A bit of Bilbo h/c with a canonical injury.)
I also like to do experiments with POV. This one was for a challenge to write a POV I had not previously written. I chose Arwen. I'd written her before, but never from her POV.
The Token Three vignettes in which Arwen deals with loss.
All of those are fairly short. I also write a great deal of fluff, and a few longer and more serious fics.
I don't actually know that any of them will be your cup of tea, but I am rather pleased with them.
(BTW: both the fics I have written/am writing for the Finish-a-thon were nominated in the Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards-- "Trotter", the one I did last year, and "Ancestress", the WIP I am doing this year! So my thanks to you!)

Date: 2010-07-16 11:15 pm (UTC)Really? I don't believe that!
And I'd like to hear your thoughts about your own work.

Date: 2010-07-16 11:19 pm (UTC)I do rec fics when someone is looking for something one of them will supply, but just picking ones I think are good? That's so subjective.
