Someone's actually trying to tackle the "blame the victim" attitude towards rape, with an Ad campaign. Colour me impressed.

There's a campaign site for it too: http://www.notever.co.uk/

Date: 2010-07-11 10:25 am (UTC)There's one line I have a problem with (apart from the automatic assumption that all men are woman-hating rapists and apologists, which seems to permeate the site - and the idea that the *ignorant* who go along with the "was asking for it" thing are deliberate premeditated woman haters rather than just, y'know, ignorant morons who've been brought up that way and need re-educated) is the bit in "About The Campaign" where they include the phrase "putting herself at risk" as something that should never be said.
My problem with that one is that it's a line that applies to pretty much all crimes, perpetrated against all genders. For example, any travel guide will tell you not to put yourself at risk of mugging or credit card cloning. Nobody ever asks to be raped, but by the same token I don't think who is asked "do you want to be raped in that dark alley?" would say "yeah, OK, let's go."
I think in their keen-ness to stamp on the "she's asking for it" kind of attitude, they've inadvertently edged towards "hey, girls, don't take the same common sense precautions that men, pensioners, tourists etc would take."
