Sadly there are always people who fall for pyramid scams and their varients. The relatively small sum of money involved in the initial $10 makes it seem cheap and greed does the rest. I'm sure people just raid the phone book for numbers.
I'm sure they appeal to just the type of people who can't resist buying lottery tickets (I regard lotteries as a tax on the mathematically innumerate).
I get e-mail ones sometimes from people who should know better. Usually they don't invove money, but are a novel way of generating even more spam as youhave to e-mail even more people to avoid bad luck.
There's also home-working scams. The daughter outlaw got caught by one of those and nearly fell for the follow up scam asking for more money for materials. Luckily a friend did some research and I put my foot down.
