Bones: 2x02 Mother and Child in the Bay

And I've made another Bones icon!

Second episode of the season, and more confrontation between Brennan and the boss-lady.

I'm glad Brennan stood her ground, fighting against the assumptions that everyone else was making. Just as well, since this case had more than one twist in it. Freshwater, salt water, raccoon paws, baby-stealing, gypsy moth excrement...

I liked how Booth said at the end, to the guy who was the original suspect in his wife's murder, that "You don't get a choice, you are a father. Step up."

Brennan was wrong about multiple partners being a better evolutionary choice; sure, you get genetic diversity, but you get an unstable environment, and human beings, unlike animals, spend a lot more time as helpless infants and children, and the environment (physical and psychological) has a huge impact. I mean, I'm kind of surprised that Brennan took the stance that she did, because I would have expected a scientifically aware Rational Humanist to know about the impact of environment... but I guess the scientific world isn't unified in that regard, so she could be leaning towards the biology-is-destiny school of thought.

Okay, this is bad; I'm so obsessed with this show I'm starting to argue with the characters.

Should I bother continuing with these Bones episode posts?

Yes. I find it interesting to see how other people who enjoy this show react to it. I'm the only person here at home who watches it.

I enjoy reading them, even though I don't often comment.

I sometimes wonder about Brennan's reactions to things, too.

And then I remember: the words she's speaking don't and things she's doing really come from an "overly rational scientist," they come from television script writers who are imagining what an "overly rational scientist" would say, with just a smidge of exaguration for comic effect.

When I remember that, her character makes a lot more sense.

(That said, I like this show, too)

You could also think of Brennan's character as being more affected by her emotions that she would ever want to admit. (which I think is a fair reading of her actions vs. her opinions on the show.)

It's hard *not* to argue with characters on this show; I've had whole conversations in my head with Brennan, with Booth, and with Angela (later in the show). That's one of the things I love about them, and about the show in general; it doesn't mind putting things out there to be argued about.

And I do think it likely that Bones leans towards the biology-is-destiny school of thought; I think (though I may be extrapolating?) that this comes up more than once as you go along in the series.
