kerravonsen: glass half full of water: Half Full (Half Full)

So there I was, getting ready for my morning shower, thinking oh yes, I should dump my greywater bucket on my poor ivy, when I noticed a noise coming in through the open bathroom window. "What's that?" I wondered. "Surely not a street-cleaner?" So I postponed dumping the bucket and went and looked out my bedroom window (one can't see properly through the bathroom window, it is too high up). So what did I see but workmen and machines digging up the side of the street, with a long pale green plastic pipe sitting there awaiting... something. "Oh no!" I thought. "They're working on the water pipes. Better check if the water is turned off." And it was. No water. No shower. However, there was the not-yet-dumped greywater bucket.

People before ivy. Sponge-bath for me.

ETA: 9:00AM - the water is back on.

Lucky you looked out! They really should have warned you. Here, they put a leaflet in the letterbox if they're doing maintenance, and a couple of weeks ago when they did an emergency fix, they did knock on doors first to warn us the water would be off for an hour or so--and even cam back after wards and told ue to turn on the lowest tap to clear the air. That almost made up for having no water last month when a pump suddenly failed.

I always keep a few gallons of water stashed away for just such emergencies. It's not so bad where I am now, but in the trailer park where I used to live, they were always randomly shutting the water off without telling anyone, plus in the winter there were sometimes issues with frozen pipes.

It's a good idea for disaster preparedness, too, especially here in the middle of the desert.
