Fic In Review 2008
Jan. 4th, 2009 09:22 pmMy Year In Fic review:
Statistics
Total (counting drabbles and reworked stories based on said drabbles): 26
Done because of
tthdrabbles "Birthday competition" (counting drabbles and jedibuttercup's birthday fic and the reworked story): 17
Done for other ficathons and challenges: 4
Spontaneous ficlet ideas that wouldn't let me alone: 3
Other: 2
Total wordcount (not counting Buffy-Doctor drabbles): 25980
Wordcount of Buffy-Doctor drabbles: 1600
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
A bit more; at least I wrote more stories/drabbles than I did in 2007. Not sure about the wordcount, since I didn't count the wordcount for 2007.
My favorite story this year (of my own):
That's hard to pick! "Doesn't Look Like A Hell Dimension" took over my brain; I think that makes it a big contender. But "Tempus Fugit" was also really satisfying - I mean, science geeks getting their nerd on, and being profound at the same time - yay!
My best story this year:
"How The Winds Are Laughing"; it just worked so well, I think.
Story most tragically underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
"Metamorphobia"; I mean, I made these cool canon connections and very few people seemed to care...
Also I feel that "Complications" is underappreciated too.
Most overrated story, in my opinion:
"Things That Never Were"; because I think "Seeking Lethe" was better, and because I'm not really satisfied with my characterisation of Eight.
Most fun story:
"Bouncing"; total fun silly crack.
Most sexy story:
Sexy? Me? Rephrase that to most "het" story and it would have to be "Reunion"; couldn't be anything else, considering that it was supposed to be swapping romance cliches.
Story with single sweetest moment:
"Reunion" because it's so nice to see them, well, have a reunion. Though I expect that there are a LOT of people for whom that character combination doesn't work.
Otherwise, strangely enough, I'd say the bit near the end of "Brewing", when Anya realizes what Snape's advice really means.
Most friendshippy story:
It's hard to pick... I think "Doesn't Look Like A Hell Dimension" wins, because it's the start of a beautiful friendship.
The story that made me cry:
None, really. I don't tend to cry at my own stories anyway.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for me" story:
"Bouncing" has to be the crackiest story I've ever written.
Story that shifted my own perception of the characters:
"Metamorphobia" was a paradigm shift in my perception of Time Lord society.
Hardest story to write:
"Reunion"; writing Nine/Nyssa while avoiding the cliche of post-Time-War angst, especially when I had not put Nine/Nyssa as one of my options - yes, that was hard.
Worst story:
"Remembrance"; I mean, it was okay, but it wasn't much, really.
Easiest story to write:
I'm not sure if it was the easiest story to write, but "How The Winds Are Laughing" was a lot easier than I expected it to be, at least the first part of it was. And as I said, "Doesn't Look Like A Hell Dimension" took over my brain, so that was fairly easy to write.
Story I'd like to revise (but probably won't):
After "Journey's End" my interest in revising "By Any Other Name" plumetted, but I feel guilty for not doing so.
Story I wish I'd finished:
The sequel to "Doesn't Look Like A Hell Dimension"; I made a huge dint in it during
picowrimo but didn't quite finish it; and then Christmas happened.
Story I didn't write but swear I will, someday:
The two Christmas drabbles I promised
astrogirl2 and
izhilzha.
Any of the stories that I didn't do this year for the finish-a-thon; so that would be:
* sequel to Complications
* my Doctor Who/Sapphire & Steel crossover
(the sequel to "Doesn't Look Like a Hell Dimension" has already been mentioned above)
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2008?
Doctor Who/Winnie-the-Pooh, Nine/Nyssa, Vorkosiverse/Harry Potter, Buffy and the Tenth Doctor
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
For writing risks, yes, see the answer to the previous question.
What did I learn?
(a) don't be afraid of writing cracky stuff if it looks like fun
(b) if you're stuck with/for an idea, sleep on it before you give up on it
(c) the "drabble method" of story writing can sometimes work really well
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
To finish various unfinished stories already mentioned.
To participate in:
- tthdrabbles Birthday challenge (in which I expect I will write more Snape/Anya and more Buffy & Ten drabbles, amongst other things)

- hlh_shortcuts
- picowrimo

Lance is dead, H. C. Clemens is dead, her place of work is closed down. Is this some kind of joke? If it is, it's not funny, and Donna is going to find the person responsible and give them a piece of her mind. (A post-"Journey's End" Donna-fixit story.)
November
- Reunion (Doctor Who) (1700w) (DW Cliche-swap ficathon)
She had expected her past to stay safely in the past, not come bounding down the hallway calling out her name. (AU) (Nyssa/Nine)
