kerravonsen: The TARDIS: "Any place. Any time. (but not where you intended)" (tardis-any-place)

So, the news is out, the Eleventh Doctor has been cast. I've now seen the Confidential where they announce it.

Well. I've never heard of Matt Smith, but then I'd never heard of any of the Doctors before they were cast, except perhaps for Peter Davison. I haven't seen anything he's been in (not even "Ruby in the Smoke", which I might reasonably have been expected to see). I'm not excited, but I'm not dissappointed either. I haven't changed my stance, really: wait and see. Well, it would have been nice to have been excited, but I shall have to assume that they cast someone whom they think will do well. Particularly since Steven Moffat said he didn't want them to cast someone young; he must have been impressive to have overcome that intent.

Interesting publicity stunt, though, making a Confidential about the new Doctor. Possibly they decided to do that because of the semi-hiatus that the show is in; they want to keep people's interest up, and the whole show was intent on getting people excited about the 11th Doctor, really. Though it was nice hearing their opinions of the previous Doctors too.

Another interesting thing is that he doesn't really have a handsome face. In some lights, he's downright ugly, in others he's fine. I find that reassuring in some ways, because it not only means that he isn't "just another pretty face" but also that the writers hopefully will not be as tempted to write him as a pretty face. The Doctor usually isn't pretty, but sometimes he has been. Paul McGann was the prettiest, definitely. Then David Tennant, followed by Peter Davison. In my opinion, anyway.

The confidential was probably because they didn't want the news to leak out and this way they had control of the announcement and the first interview.

I've got a wait and see view myself. It's not just about how Matt Smith with play the role, it's also about how Steven Moffat with write the new Doctor.

So do I, the episodes he's written have been among my favourites.
