It does not suck! (I feel bad for Rose, but it could've gone that way, if she'd lost her nerve.) And I always liked Nyssa, and it makes sense for the Doctor to find an old friend to console with after all of Gallifrey got blown to bits-- especially *this* friend, who's had the same thing happen to her. (The second part is no more far-fetched than most fanfic, seriously.)
I feel bad for Rose, but it could've gone that way, if she'd lost her nerve. (nods) One could see it where she was overwhelmed by all the aliens, and then by all the death, that it could have gone either way, if she hadn't bounced back from it. And I wanted this story to be deliberately AU, rather than set pre-Rose or set in the "eighteen seconds" at the end of "Rose", because (a) I wanted to avoid the cliche that Nine seeks Nyssa immediately post-Time War and (b) I wanted to avoid the cliche of setting a whole lot of things in that eighteen seconds. This being a cliche swap ficathon, I wanted to avoid the cliches that normally went with Nine.
And I always liked Nyssa, and it makes sense for the Doctor to find an old friend to console with after all of Gallifrey got blown to bits-- especially *this* friend, who's had the same thing happen to her. I think that is the fundamental appeal of Nine/Nyssa, really; having that shared sorrow in common, and the fact that Nyssa coped with the loss better than the Doctor did.
