kerravonsen: from "The Passion", Christ's head with crown of thorns: "Love" (Love)

[livejournal.com profile] izhilzha would be pleased at our Children's Talk this morning at church: it was a potted summary of the Lord of the Rings, and why Sam was the real hero. (grin) I think the connection between it and the sermon (which was about Daniel) was the question of being faithful and loyal and doing what is right.

Further musings, sort of sparked by the sermon, but only tangengially...

What is the nature of God?

- He cannot be any less loving than the most loving human being, and is much more so.
- He cannot be any less wise than the most wise human being, and is much more so.
- If we say "perfection is like this; God is perfect; therefore God is like this" be wary, because it is backwards, and our notion of what Perfection is, is doubtless limited and imperfect.
- If we disapprove of something that God has done, don't forget, we don't have the whole picture.

I fond of Frodo, but him wasting away and sailing off into the West after everything always felt like giving up to me. A lot of the LOTR-verse seems mired in mournful decline, in fact. But Sam! He was the rock of the Quest, and he stuck around and was the rock of the Shire as well for how many years? I adore him like I adore Faramir: they're more accessible to me as people than some of the Big Heroes of the quest, however admirable said Big Heroes might be in other areas.

I agree with everything you said. Sometimes we forget that we don't have the whole picture and we should remember that our limited understanding is just that, limited.

Those two are also my favourites and for the same reasons. Though...I do love Aragorn too, but more when he was a ranger.

and why Sam was the real hero

*grins too* That's a fact.

And ditto on your other observations.

I suppose we all have our favourites. Mine are Faramir, Merry, Gimli and Eowyn.
