Linux.conf.au (3)
Jan. 30th, 2008 04:37 pmI am typing this in the "lounge" of Linuxconf, sitting at a table, with my new ASUS eeePC plugged in to a powerpoint, using the Linuxconf wireless network!
As my cryptic post of yesterday indicated, yes, I bought this yesterday. The keyboard is pretty small (to go with the small size of the machine itself), so I'm a little more prone to typos here, but it's not too bad.
Last night, I followed the suggested procedures for updating the laptop... and it broke Firefox. Since Xandros is sort of non-Free, I had been intending to replace it eventually, but the breakage of Firefox put that on an accelerated program. It is now running eeeXubuntu. There's still a fair bit of customization that I'll be doing. But is good.
Interesting talks, yes. And also skipping of talks to play with my new toy.
Things that I've been making mental notes ("Oh I must follow this up!") about so far in the conference:
Monday: Accessability
Tuesday: Efficient Perl scripting
Wednesday: GIMP-fu (and maybe python-fu)
We'd just sat down for the last talk of the day -- I'd decided to go to the talk on "The Consumer View of Technology", in the Old Arts Building -- when a fire alarm went off. We ignored it for a bit, then, sheeplike, we left the building, and stood around in the sunshine. I eventually walked around the building and saw a fire engine, so, even if it had been a false alarm, it certainly wasn't a drill.
I decided to give up on that talk and go down to the lounge. And play with my new toy.

Date: 2008-02-03 01:58 am (UTC)They seem to be multiplying. (grin) But you get a lot of bang for your buck. I've never really been tempted by palmtops, but this is IMHO the perfect compromise between smallness and features.

Yeah, I was totally unimpressed. I gather from a friend who used Xandros when he was switching from MS-Windows to Linux that it's a really nice friendly distro, but when things go wrong, they take a long time to be fixed.
I'm thinking of going to eeeXubuntu myself - I've got the live on a USB flash drive. (I want to test out eeeubuntu and eeedora first, though.)
I used Debian before I changed over to GenToo on my main desktop, so I'm comfortable with (and prefer) Debian-based distros over RedHat-based ones, so I'm not even tempted by eeedora. And I've been impressed with how things Just Work with Ubuntu (and its variants). Since I find both Gnome and KDE a bit bloated for me, I tried eeeXubuntu first, and while I hadn't ever used Xfce before, I found it nice and easy. So I think I'll be sticking with eeeXubuntu.

Date: 2008-02-03 02:14 am (UTC)Did you do a swap partition on your install? The wiki says that you need to if you only have 512 Megs of RAM, but I don't want to install one if I don't have to.
(The eee is a lovely little machine. I bought one of the first ones available in North America.)
