Five fictional characters that I want on my side when the apocalypse comes:
The Doctor
Miles Vorkosigan
John (from the Tomorrow People)
Methos
Gandalf
I'm being disciplined and making them come from different universes, otherwise Romana would be there too, except that I'd run out of room also. It would also depend on what kind of Apocalypse it was...

Date: 2007-08-16 12:13 pm (UTC)protagonisthero of a series of Military Space-SF novels by Lois McMaster Bujold. Think of him as a cross between Napoleon and Brer Rabbit, in a concentrate. Very short, hyperactive, brilliant, and could sell ice to Eskimos.John (last name unknown) is the leader of the Tomorrow People (TV series of the same name, British, made in the late 70s). They style themselves as "the next stage of human evolution", they have psi powers (particularly telepathy, teleportation (which they call Jaunting) and healing). They're also incapable of killing, it's a built-in instinct. He's the calm and sensible (and bossy) one of the group; as I said, their leader. He'd be good at finding a peaceful solution to an apocalypse.
Methos (from the TV series Highlander, which was a spin-off of the movie of the same name) is an Immortal. In this fantasy universe, Immortals (of mysterious origin) don't generally know that they're immortal until they die (and revive) for the first time, after which their immortality kicks in, and they stop aging. Most death-dealing things they either shrug off or temporarily die. However, they can be killed permanently if they're beheaded. And a lot of beheading takes place, because of The Game, which is basically that the last immortal standing wins the Prize (though it isn't really clear what that is, though ruling the world probably has something to do with it).
Anyway, so Methos is an Immortal. In fact, he's the oldest of the Immortals, about 5000 years old, which is no small feat, considering the amount of beheading that goes on. However, he hasn't survived this long because he's stronger or more skilled, he's survived this long because he's sneaky and a psychological chameleon. And because he doesn't let people know that he's the legendary Methos. He's very elusive and ambiguous; definitely not the heroic type. But I still think he'd be handy to have around in an apocalypse because he's a survivor and very clever.
In fact, if you had Miles, the Doctor and Methos in the same room, they'd probably manage to not only talk the hind legs off a donkey, but persuade it to go for a walk afterwards, and convince it that two legs were the height of fashion.

Both series are out on DVD, actually, so you might be able to borrow them from someone.
Though I will have to note that Methos is not the main protagonist in Highlander (he's only in about a dozen episodes over the six seasons). That honour goes to Duncan MacLeod, who is the eponymous "Highlander" of the title. Oh, I like Duncan too, but he's your basic straightforward Hero -- also handy for having around in an Apocalypse, but if I had to choose only one of them it would be Methos.
