After reading this post by
lizbee I feel as if I have to go into mourning for the Doctor; as if he died and some shape-shifter stole his body and I didn't realize it until now.
I don't want to feel this way. I don't want to feel as if the Doctor is no more.
Please, people, tell me why I should have any hope for Doctor Who, and Ten in particular.

Date: 2007-07-02 01:18 pm (UTC)In the meantime, I had two (probably over-optimistic) thoughts after watching the final episode last night.
1) Now they've done their Big Love Story arc, and their Unrequited Love Story arc (I didn't actually believe what they said about either story, but they think they've done them), perhaps they can start leaving shipping to the fans and stop trying to write it into canon.
2) If Martha is ceasing to be a regular companion (which I think is a good thing for her - dumping the Doctor seems like a smart move in current circumstances - but not good for us, because when not required to mope about Unrequited Love she was one of the most enjoyable aspects of this season), there is no possible reason I can see why we should not have a black Doctor. Bring on Paterson Joseph!

Date: 2007-07-02 03:18 pm (UTC)The worst thing that can happen is that things get so awful we have to wander away for a while (as I did during most of the Sixth Doctor's tenure, and again when the Seventh Doctor started because I hated "Time and the Rani" so much and thought Seven was an intolerable buffoon -- I only learned to love Seven much later, through reading the NA's and then going back to watch his better episodes).
No, wait, the worst thing that can happen is that things get really awful and the show gets cancelled, leaving us with nothing but fanfic and the occasional tie-in novel or completely misguided TV movies...
Oh, wait, that already happened.
I suggest that we all dismiss Part Three of the season finale as RTD's crack-addled hallucination, write our own alternative endings (or go with <lj user="lizbee"'s if we're too busy for that) and carry on as usual.

Date: 2007-07-03 11:14 am (UTC)I like this solution. I like it A LOT. Maybe there should be a contest or a ficathon of "The Real LOTTL" episodes/stories?

Date: 2007-08-18 03:40 am (UTC)And sorry, hi, here from a friend of a friend's journal. Still reading brand new ("It was a poochscrew!") responses about LOTTL, after all these weeks.

Date: 2007-08-18 02:43 pm (UTC)I'm thinking folks - even those that would be keen on such a comm - were just so disillusioned in the LOTTL aftermath? They couldn't even bare to think on it for too long without said "knashing of teeth" or just, you know, were in the process of cleansing it from the brain with or without the aide of various substances (didn't help, speaking from experience). Now that the debris has settled, I'm seeing S3-based fics crop up more and more, so I'd wonder if you re-approached it now people might be interested? Although the numbers of disillusioned are most certainly bound to increase after Nov. 2. *sighs* Oh Rusty, you crackfic peddler, you.
If you didn't mind, I was thinking about telling a few on my flist who would be intrigued and linking back here, but it's cool if you want to hold off.

Date: 2007-07-02 03:47 pm (UTC)Martha wanted sexual love - he couldn't give her that and he knew it. He couldn't give her what she needed and he was honest enough not to try and fake it.
I realised after you'd phoned that I'd forgotten the most important point of all - and one that you would surely understand.
Who was in most need of forgiveness?
It's easy to forgive someone who stole your toy. It's much much harder to forgive someone who has murdered millions of people on a world that you regard as your second home.
Ten tried to give that gift to the person who was in greatest need of it. And the Master's rejection does not remove that gift.

Date: 2007-07-02 09:22 pm (UTC)The other thing about forgiveness is that it's a gift to the person who does the forgiving, too. It's probably true that the Doctor couldn't have lived with himself if he hadn't forgiven the Master.
Ten seems to wobble too and fro between inappropriate vengeance and inappropriate forgiveness, though.
