kerravonsen: Hiro with arms spread: "I DID it!" (Hiro)

I haven't seen #21 yet, but I thought I'd gather my thoughts. (Please don't spoil)

From the top, what do we know?
- There are people with "special powers"; they have "a complex of four genes" (according to Mohinder)
- Their frequency appears to be increasing. May or may not be, but appears to be. The appearance could be deceptive, because it may simply be that it isn't an increase in numbers, but an increase in detection.
- Most Gifted have just one talent (though a talent may be multi-faceted)
- There are two people known to be able to acquire additional talents: Peter and Sylar. Sylar does it by eating dissecting brains, and Peter does it by being empathetic. Thought and feeling, destruction and creation.
- There were some Gifted people in Linderman's generation; there was a group of Gifted idealists, but something went wrong.
- Linderman founded "The Company" to track, study (and if necessary, kill) Gifted people. Some Gifted are recruited to work for the Company.
- Linderman is an organized crime boss, and The Company is like a bad cross between the Mafia and the CIA.
HRG, Mr. Nakamura, "Claude" all worked for the Company 15-odd years ago.
More recent Company employees included Eden (Persuasion) and The Haitian (memory and neutralization); Candice (shape-shifting)
- I'm not entirely clear as to whether Mrs. Petrelli was Gifted or not.
- The second generation of Gifted are folks like Nathan Petrelli and Peter Petrelli.
- The third generation: Claire and Micah... not sure where Hiro fits.
- We have Mrs. Petrelli, her sons Nathan (flying) and Peter (empathy), and Nathan's daughter Claire (regeneration), whose mother was also Gifted (a firestarter).

Prof. Surresh the elder had crazy theories, and he published a book about them. He had a daughter, deceased, and a son, Mohinder. I'm not sure whether dead daughter was Gifted or just had something wrong with her.
Prof. Surresh went to New York and took a job as a taxi driver. Somehow, he found Gabriel Grey (who had a talent of "knowing how things work") and didn't realize that that was what his talent was, and Grey left in a snit, snatching the address of one of the other Gifted people as he went, Brian Wood. He then went and killed Brian Wood, and stole his power, telekinesis. That seemed to become his "primary" power, somehow. He started calling himself Sylar (after one of his watches) and killed Prof. Surresh. Then he went on a serial-killing spree.

Three Gifted people have seen visions of a huge explosion which destroys New York:
- Isaac Mendez painted it.
- Hiro Nakamura teleported to the future (Nov 8th) and witnessed it.
- Peter Petrelli dreamed about it.
Isaac and Peter's evidence also points to the explosion being caused by an exploding man.

There are three possible candidates for the exploding man: Ted, the guy with the nuclear talent; Peter Petrelli, who could get the nuclear talent by just meeting Ted; Sylar, who could get the nuclear talent by killing Ted.

Peter's dream indicates that it is Peter himself, losing control by absorbing too many powers.
Also, the "five years in the future" episode indicates that it was indeed Peter.
The people who knew about Peter's dream were Peter, Nathan, Isaac Mendez, "Claude", HRG -- did Mrs. Petrelli know?

However, since it was put about that it had actually been caused by Sylar, Future!Hiro thinks it was caused by Sylar, so he thinks that the way to stop the bomb is to kill Sylar, and the way to ensure that Sylar is killable is to "save the cheerleader", so he goes back and tells Peter to do so.

So, we have three timelines here:
1) original sequence of events, Sylar kills Claire and becomes indestructible. New York explodes on Nov 8th (but we don't know who it necessarily was who exploded). Peter gets a scar. I'm not sure when Hiro tries to kill Sylar, but he fails. Hiro tries to figure out how to change the past, goes back and tells Peter to save the cheerleader.
2) Peter saves the cheerleader. Sylar is caught, and Hiro is told so. Hiro is not told that Sylar escaped. New York explodes because Peter lost control. Peter survives because he's indestructible (but he still gets a scar -- that doesn't make sense). Nathan puts about that it was Sylar who did it. Sylar kills Candice. Sylar kills Ted (we know that, because he has the nuclear power). Sylar kills Nathan and takes his place.
Hiro arrives five years on. Future!Hiro tells Past!Hiro that he must kill Sylar because Sylar caused the explosion. Past!Hiro goes back into the past.
3) Hiro arrives back in the past. Isaac Mendez is already dead (earlier than he died in timeline #1) but Hiro doesn't know that Isaac is dead.

Where are the pieces now? (As of the end of episode #20)
- Hiro and Ando are on top of Isaac Mendez's building in New York.
- Isaac Mendez is dead in his apartment; Sylar killed him.
- Sylar may or may not be still there.
- HRG, Parkman and Ted are on their way to New York to destroy the Company's tracking system.
- Claire, Peter, Nathan, Mrs. Petrelli and The Haitian are in New York. Mrs. Petrelli wants to take Claire to Paris where it's safe.
- In Las Vegas, Micah has been kidnapped by Linderman, with Candice's help. Linderman wants to ensure that "his" future happens.
- Nikki/Jessica is about to discover that Micah is missing.
- Mohinder is in New York -- hasn't he just met the Company guy (HRG's former boss); I forget.

Hmmmm.

No spoilers here, just sharing in the thoughts.

Sylar didn't have the nuclear power, actually -- he was using his ice power (which he got very early on, though we haven't seen him use it much) in that showdown with Future-Peter, IIRC. He had the ice and Peter had (presumably Exploding Ted's) fire.

Also, we haven't seen this confirmed, but I believe Mrs. Petrelli is Gifted and that her power is prophetic dreams -- Peter has been having these dreams off and on throughout the show and they aren't connected to painting as they would be if he were using Isaac's powers. This would also fit in with Mrs. P's insinuation that she's been a player in the Hero Game since the beginning and her statement that she knew about Nathan and Peter's powers long before they did.
