New Who 3x01 "Smith and Jones"
Apr. 1st, 2007 07:16 pmWell, that was fun. Spoilers ho!
Good bits:
Rain falling upward, city building on the moon; that was cool.
"You don't get the title unless you've earned it."
"What's that for?"
"Compensation."
The bit with the tie at the start, adding to the general strangeness of the day, and explained at the end; that was fun.
Yay, Martha did CPR on the Doctor!
The plot didn't suck. (Yes, this is a good thing, considering how stupid the plot of New Earth was last year) I liked the idea of mercenary police bureaucratically looking for their fugitive (I've seen it in SF before... ah yes, most recently in one of the Liaden books) but just because it isn't original doesn't mean it's bad, since it hasn't actually been used in DW before.
The running out of oxygen wasn't a bad touch -- though there were so many McGuffins flying around one could do a lot of "Yes, but..." Yes, but it's Doctor Who. They're allowed to have force fields and teleporting buildings -- they're just not allowed to have magical intravenous medications applied topically. 8-)
Bad bits:
Sucking blood with a straw? C'mon! And none of it spilled? C'mon! Oh well.
So you super-boosted the MRI so it would destroy all life on Earth? Golly, what a secret weapon that would make. Er, where were you getting the power for that again?
Martha examined the Doctor, found that his heart wasn't in the right place, and she didn't believe he was alien? No, I guess that's reasonable. He was already in the "huh?" category anyway.
I was a bit dissappointed that the sonic screwdriver wasn't permanently disabled, like they did for a time with Five. Though actually it would probably be better if they lost the Psychic Paper.
It's rather tiring that they have to sit there and explain explicitly that the Doctor and Martha aren't a couple. Though I'm also glad that they're not a couple.
Er, That Kiss... (whine) "Is this a kissing book?" Though it was logical from a plot point of view.
More thoughts:
Doctor, you keep forgetting that you have a very bad track record at getting your companions back home on time.
I think Martha must be the most level-headed and sensible person in her family. This shows in two ways (a) the bit at the start where they were all ringing her up to try to get her to resolve the problem to their satisfaction, instead of actually talking to each other (b) when the hospital is transported to the moon, she keeps her head where all about her are panicking.
Like Rose, she impresses the Doctor by asking the right questions, and making reasonable deductions (not necessarily the correct conclusions, but he's reasonable enough to realize that when one does not have all the facts, one is hampered in one's deductions).
I have a feeling I've seen the actress who plays Martha's mother somewhere else...

Date: 2007-04-01 10:51 am (UTC)I thought that too, but I've looked through her IMDB record (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0027957/) and can't see anything I'd have watched. They even give some stage credits, but those aren't ringing a bell either. Maybe she's been on the radio.
