kerravonsen: (Doc8-time-and-tide)

I spent most of this morning and part of this afternoon working on a plugin I said I was going to work on, and it's basically done (I just have to do last-minute checks, check it in, upload, and copy the updated docs to the right spot. I'll do that tomorrow).

My impatient nature didn't want to wait until Monday to fix up my drive problem, so about 2pm I decided, yes, I would go into the city, to try to get a USB 2.0 card (and, maybe a larger external drive too)

So I looked up the bus timetable and found it didn't leave until 2:50 -- but that gave me time to continue working on the plugin. Then I went and caught the bus, starting work on another bookmark while I was on the bus. I probably should have worn a jacket, but I didn't really feel the cold until much later when I was waiting in the wind for my bus home -- but I'm getting ahead of myself.

I had forgotten that there was some kind of festival going on this weekend, which meant that the bus got diverted.
Then I went to Dick Smith's to get batteries and see what else they had. They had a USB card, which was about the price I expected, so I bought it then and there. This was just as well, because the two places I intended to look at for a larger USB external drive (with the intent that the nice slim one I had bought before, I could put all my music on it, and then I could move it between the laptop and the desktop and have music wherever I go...) -- anyway, both shops were shut. Was I going to have to wait for Monday after all? After having come all this way?

No!

So I wandered around looking at various places I knew of other computer shops nearby; the first one was shut, the second one was open (and it was something like 4:30pm by this time).
The eager salesman bounced up and asked me what I wanted, and I asked if they had any external USB drives. Since this one was intended just to back up the desktop, it didn't need to be so portable; and the less portable ones had more capacity. Now, the places that I had been originally been intending to go had sales on 320G drives, but I was really just looking for something that was bigger than 120G, so when the salesman suggested a 250G drive, I was quite happy to go with that, though I was equally happy to find out how much a larger drive would cost (because the 250G drive was cheaper than my budget estimate). So he got out a 400G drive and told me how much that would be, and we agreed that the 250G drive was better value for money. So then he started putting the drive into the drive casing, and he couldn't find the screws, and he was about to go and get another box (assuming this one was defective, since parts were missing) and I pointed out what packet the screws were in. So he then said he'd give me the labour for free (which meant $10 off the price, which was nice).

Then after it had all been put together, plugged in to a computer and powered up, we discovered that he'd put the 400G drive in by mistake, rather than the 250G drive! They'd both been there on the bench, but he'd picked the wrong one up. So he would have to do it all again! Unless I wanted to change my mind and go for the 400G drive? I asked him what the total cost for that would be, and it was about the same price as I had been expecting to pay for the 320G drive from the other place, so I said "yes".

I was very pleased to get a 400G drive for the price of a 320G drive!

So that was all settled, I bought it, and left. It was about 5pm by this time, so I decided to celebrate by eating dinner at the Pancake Parlour. That was yummy, but it took a while. I replaced the batteries in my CD player and listened to stuff while I ate.

Then I had to catch the bus home, and that was a saga, because the festival was still going on (some Greek festival with rides and food and stands and stuff) and that meant that the busses were still diverted, and the only way I could be certain of catching a bus and not being at the wrong spot would be to go to the bus stop which was at the point before (or after, depending on what direction one was going in) the diversion. Which meant a lot of walking, some of it through the festival itself.

Being replete with a full meal (entree + dessert, golly that Bavarian Apple Pancake was filling) I was not at all tempted by the food, not even the fairy floss, which I usually have a weakness for (a kind of "special occassion" thing). And I walked and walked, and finally made it to the designated bus stop.

I looked at the timetable that was up there, and it looked as if I'd have at least half an hour wait, and probably more because the traffic was rather snarled up because of the diversion because of the festival. But I decided to just wait there instead of go anywhere else, because, where would I go? So I sat down and listened to my CD, and then I found the wind was blowing a bit much, so I got up and walked to a spot that I hoped was more out of the wind, but it wasn't really. So I kind of alternated between standing, walking, and sitting. And wished I'd brought my jacket.

But the bus eventually came, and I worked more on my bookmark, and I got home.

And then I installed the USB card, plugged in the drive, formatted it, and it worked!
I now have a solution for backups! Whee!
The drive is huge in comparison to my actual desktop drives, but I am not going to put anything on it except backups; that is its entire purpose.

And the slimline drive now has my music on it and it is working swimmingly. Whee!

And I am weary, have a headache, and my feet hurt. And we change out of daylight savings tonight, so I should probably get to bed.

In the jumble, the mighty jumble, the hunter shops tonight (oh-weem-oh-way)!

Sounds like a productive day. Good for you. :)

I love it when purchases fall together like that. :-)

Quick question: is fairy floss the same as candy floss? Candy floss is what we Yanks call cotton candy, but I've never heard it called fairy floss before.

We went from standard time to daylight savings (lost an hour) two Sundays ago. Between losing the hour and working evening hours all week with shows (which gets me home around 10 - 11:00, and I need at least another hour to wind down), it took me a week to adjust to the new time. If the change out of DST works for you the way it works for us, yay for your extra hour of sleep; sounds like you need it.
