OK, Kat, we gotta talk. When's yours?
Also, on Consideration - and this is to imply no obligation whatsoever to actually write it up:
It is plain that our boy Lon is going to have to undertake a Quest. He is a spoilt prince of a wounded civilization - at least wounded in the sense that they all seemed to play around, oblivious to the malevolent force that would have done them in. Lon's problem? Privilege. His civilization's problem? Sloth and illusion, masking cowardice.
I would say that the Maara has to be still around, down in the Collective Unconscious or some such; so that a champion will be required, who can withstand all the Fear and Despair it can dish out, and then turn his back on all the Greed it can offer to satisfy. Thus, our boy needs the tutelage and experience that will teach him Strength, Belief and Restraint in equal measure. The same qualities being what a civilization really needs, if it's going to mess with thought-materialization tech. If Lon had started taking things seriously earlier, he might have caught the Maara before it got entrenched; but he didn't, so he dropped the ball, and now he has restitution to make.
He has two past civilizations to challenge him - the Sumaara for addiction, the Manusa for hubris - and two more out in spacetime - the Federation, and wherever the Kinda live. He has the means for getting there, the realm of dreams and visions, and the Snake Dancers to give him the key.
Hey, why not? I liked the guy, puppy fat, earring and all. He had that spoilt prince thing going for him.
Reiterated felicitations, jedibuttercup!!!
Last thing, the blogger herelinked writes very interesting stuff, mostly about Marvel comics - worth the effort of following his rather abstruse chains of thought - and he's spot on here.

Oh, and many happy returns, jedibuttercup!!!

No, no, you weren't being argumentative, it was a discussion.
I think the reason why I like Snakedance so much, despite its flaws (and yes, I agree, it was rather annoying that the Doctor was mostly running around being ineffectual) is because it's got a nifty idea at the core of it, and despite your annoyance at the obviousness of the irony, I liked the irony too. Not necessarily the irony of Lon being the decendant of the person who freed the Manoussans from the Mara, but the irony of the hubris of the Manoussan empire in creating the Great Mind's Eye in the first place, and being destroyed by their greatest achievement.
I would say that the Maara has to be still around, down in the Collective Unconscious or some such
I think that the point made by the fall of the Manoussan Empire was that the potential for the Mara is always there, because it was the embodiment of the Fear, Despair and Greed that is in the darkness of the human heart. And, if I recall correctly, the Great Crystal is still around, so the Mara could still be re-created, even if this incarnation of the Mara was destroyed.
Y'know, they never answered the question of why the Great Crystal wasn't destroyed. Even if it's very hard to destroy, heck, if you have space travel, surely one could chuck it into the sun...
That question aside, yeah, if Lon has any brains at all, he knows the potential is there. Note that the fear of the Mara is one of the things that the Mara fed on; and Lon could well revolt against that, and want to conquer his fear, and that could be the first step along the path.
Hey, why not? I liked the guy, puppy fat, earring and all. He had that spoilt prince thing going for him.
