I am considering whether I will run a gen_remix ficathon; like remix_redux but gen only. The rules would be similar to RemixRedux, but all the qualifying stories would have to be gen (and the remixes also).

It won't, however, be worth doing if there aren't enough folks interested. I know there's a huge number of folks who do Remix, but that doesn't mean that anyone would necessarily be interested in doing both, or in doing a gen remix instead.

ETA: By "What minimum story length?" I mean, the length of stories that have to be written, not the length of qualifying stories. I'm assuming that the stories-which-qualify rule would be as for RemixRedux (500 words).

Re my 'other' answer: I don't care when you have it, except that I think it should not run at the same time as remix_redux so as not to be competing for participants. Many people might participate in both, but not both at once.

The difficulty will be in finding a period that doesn't clash with a major ficathon. Can't clash with Remix -- that's reasonable. But I also don't want it to clash with Multiverse, finish-a-thon, NaNoWriMo or Yuletide!

Maybe I should make it biannual; alternate Multi-Lyric with gen_remix. Would that make sense, or would people just forget its existance?

Well, my preference would be annually, but I'm not the arbiter of the universe. I will say this: you're never going to find a time with NO ficathons; there are just too many. So just avoid the ones that are major competition. NaNo is November, Yule is December, Remix is Feb-Apr. When is Multiverse, again? And the finish-a-thon? There must be some time available mid-year.

Last year, Multiverse was March-July, and the finish-a-thon was August-October (this is including the time for the sign-ups). There isn't any year left!

Well, I don't think you need to count the time for the sign-ups. The important thing is to stagger the due dates, not keep them from overlapping entirely. People do write more than six fics a year--even I can manage that. ;-)

I might be interested, as I like remixes and I like gen, and, as we all know, I'm a big fat ficathon slut. :) But I'm hesitant because I really don't want to have to go to the work of going through all my stories and creating an index of the ones that would qualify as gen under the rules. If you count the drabbles and things, there are hundreds of them, and if that's needed, it's probably more work than I'm willing to do. I also don't think I'll participate if "gen" is defined in such a way that het romance is OK but slash isn't. I'm mildly uncomfortable with that even with your other ficathons, and, whether it's rational or not, there feels like a big difference in my mind between putting certain things off-limits in terms of what kind of stories are acceptable to write for a 'thon vs. asking me to categorize my own or other people's stories based on discriminatory standards, if that makes sense. I chose "PG" on the poll because I think "no pairings" is a bit difficult to define... There's a big difference between a fic which happens to mention a canon pairing in passing vs. one that's obviously All About the Romance, but I think there's a continuum there, and the boundary is pretty fuzzy. Then again, I suppose "PG" can be a bit difficult to define, too. Whatever you decide to go with, my only personal make-or-break objection would be if het and slash are treated differently.

Other than that, it'll probably just depend on what my scedule works out to be, and whether you'll have enough people who have stories in the fandoms I can actually write.

Why would you have to?

I'm assuming that what is required is
(a) to count up the number of stories that qualify (and I forgot to mention that drabbles wouldn't qualify -- I'm assuming that the "minumum length of a qualifying story is 500 words" rule would still be the same) in order to see what fandoms you can list in your sign-up
and
(b) make sure that the story you *write* is gen.

They wouldn't count towards qualifying someone in a fandom, but they'd still be acceptable to remix, right? At least, that's the way remixredux does it.

I think it's a good idea, but I still voted no for the first question because I'm just not interested in rewriting other people's stories. I filled in the other questions too because they'd apply to other gen ficathons.

Personally, when I write a story I usually stick to a character's canon sexuality, be it het or slash. This is a personal preference and one I don't expect everyone to share:-)

Most of my fics fall into the PG category anyway (for gore and the chopping off of heads)hence I put down PG for my preference.

I'm willing to participate at any rating level designated, including no sex or pairings whatsoever. But I'm not willing to participate in a ficathon specifically banning slash.

Though I could certainly have fun remixing some het stories into gen. Would that be acceptable under this definition? (I'm going off the mini-discussion you and Astro had above.)

I guess it would depend on whether the plot of the story was amenable to that sort of remixing -- remember, the plot has to stay the same. Otherwise, I guess, in theory, it would be okay.

I'd say PG13 as the upper limit and no pairings. (You don't want to only exclude slash, people will pick on you.)

Mainly because I see a way to:
1) Find some stories that I'd very much like to read
2) Pimp my fic :)
and 3) Try this ficathon thing somewhere where I don't have to be afraid of being asked for a 'ship that I Absolutely Cannot Write (which, frankly, is most of the non-canon ones--though sometimes even the canon ones defy comprehension (*cough*Spike/Buffy*cough*)

Hey, long time no hear. I'd read your fanzine work back when I was more active in B7 fandom many years ago (ghads I don't want to think about how long). I'd contributed, but mainly to the slash mailing list which was a main method of communication back in those ancient times. ;)

Glad to see you again in fandom; I saw your interesting LJ name in a post by jedibuttercup and thought I'd take a look-see. I'm mainly involved with HP fandom atm, but still enjoy my previous fandoms as well. Damn, when are they ever going to straighten copyrights out and release B7 on DVD in the US? *whines*

I'm not all that familiar with certain fandoms and am wondering if you will match people up by what they can remix by fandom? I'd hate to get a fandom I know nothing about.

Yes, just like the original remix matches authors by fandom. I'd use the same method I used to match people by fandom that I used for the Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel ficathon.
