Doctor Who: Fear Her
Jun. 25th, 2006 10:24 pmOkay, so now I've watched "Fear Her". Only I'm now all distracted by the trailer for the next episode, which is presumably a two-parter. But, back to "Fear Her".
Good:
I think the snatching people into drawings was nicely creepy. Not to mention the monster in the closet...
Also the twist that the alien wasn't evil as such, just desperate and lonely.
And how it couldn't understand why they were unhappy to be snatched.
And how it was a tiny pretty flower-like thing.
Rose was again being nicely proactive and helped save the day.
I did find it a bit disconcerting that the repeated song was "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree..." I learned that as a kid, though I'd always felt that that song was rather off, because the Kookaburra's laugh is not at all merry. It's a warning cry. Though perhaps that might have contributed to the feeling of creepiness for me. But I did like how they sung it together at the end -- coming together at last.
ETA: Oh, and I liked the offhand reference to the Doctor having been a father once. 8-)
Bad:
Having the Doctor carry the torch was a bit naff.
4 million brothers and sisters? C'mon!
ETA: And, yes, the Olympic torch as a symbol of "love" doesn't work either. Though it might have worked if they'd used another word -- like unity. That would have fit better and still been the kind of emotion that the alien needed.
And now for spoilery musings about the trailer:
Okay, so we're finally going to come headlong with Torchwood, and they're going to be arrogant and stupid. Why do they always have to be arrogant and stupid?
Mind you, the Doctor is too often arrogant and clever... but it would feel more like just deserts if his opponents weren't so bwa-ha-ha as they appear they're going to be. (sigh)
Rose is going to die, of course. Bravely in battle. Though presumably not until the second part.
And the cybermen are going to be coming from that parallel universe... which means that Mickey and Co didn't succeed -- or didn't succeed enough.
But aren't we supposed to meet the Face of Boe again? Or is that next year?

Date: 2006-06-25 02:17 pm (UTC)If you look closely at the shot in the trailer where the Doc and Rose are looking out through a window, Pete Tyler is next to them, and someone who looks a lot like Mickey is behind them.
As for Rose dying, it's interesting that we see her narrating the story, which seems to imply she must un-die to be able to tell it!
And the Face Of Boe returns next year- RTD has already said they moved one of his lines to next season, and there will be an episode set in the year Five Billion or so.

Unless she's just narrating the trailer? Or, possibly, maybe she goes back with Mickey and Alt-Pete? Naw.

Ah.

Date: 2006-06-25 09:35 pm (UTC)"I am Kai, last of the Brunnen-G. Millennia ago, the Brunnen-G led humanity to victory in the war against the Insect civilization. The Time Prophet predicted that I would be the one to destroy the Divine Order and the League of 20,000 Planets. Some day, that will happen... but not today, as today is my day of death. The day our story begins."
In other words, fill her up with proto-blood and anything can happen.

But I expect RTD wants to milk all possible Rose!love out of this, and nothing inspires worship like a martyr; and martyrs need to stay dead or they aren't martyrs.
