Either way, I think he was being a bit tongue-in-cheek about it - at least he could laugh at his own theories!

I have to say that I am not entirely convinced that 'fever dream' and 'work of art' are mutually exclusive. In fact, P that I am, I am not entirely convinced that any pair of those are mutually exclusive. ;-P

Nice poll! While I chose "work of art", it was only the closest I could get, not really what I think. It's more like "a pale reflection", I think. What's the "block of stone" concept?

A failed metaphor, I fear. I meant it to be something along the lines of "The universe just is."

Sort of. It's like how we're made in the "image" of God, which isn't anything like actually being God. The universe we know is a pale image (a "seen through a glass darkly" kind of thing) of the real universe, unmarred by sin and unconstrained by space and time. An idea that is hinted at by the promise of "a new heaven and a new earth", I guess. C.S. Lewis wrote about it in The Last Battle.
