Bigger on the Outside

I have before me, the Special Boxed Set of the 2005 Doctor Who, Season One. And it has to be the most bulky and space-wasting boxed-set I have ever seen. More bulky than that silly Dalek tin (I may still have that tin somewhere; I think I used it to put slide-boxes in). And the only reason for making it so bulky, so far as I can see, is so that it could be made in the shape of a Police Box. You open it up (the attaching panel is stuck together with a magnetic strip) and you see... a lot of air. The four episode-disks are attached to the inside of each of the four "sides" of the TARDIS-box, and there is also a hinged bit of cardboard which has, on one side, a little pocket where the "Collector's Edition Booklet" sits, and on the other side is attached the "Doctor Who Confidential" disk. The whole thing could have fit into 1/5th the space. (sigh)

I'm still glad I have it, though. Well, I hope the extras are worth it, anyway. Where am I going to put the thing?

Well, I've now watched "Rose" with the commentary on, and would rate it middling. It was better than the B7 commentaries, because the three of them (Russell T. Davis, and two others whose names I've already forgotten, one of them was Julie something, the producer) were able to keep going without needing prompting, but they were talking about producer-y things (like sets and lights and shooting schedules) which I find less interesting than actor-commentary. Though I can understand why we didn't get actor-commentary, because it would be too difficult to get them back into the studio.

Also, there were a few slightly spoilery remarks about stuff they intend to do in the future, and The Christmas Invasion. C'est la vie.

I saw steverogerson's when it arrived on Saturday, and my first comment was that it wasn't the right shape for a police box - much too squat!

True enough. As close to the shape of a police box that they could come while using standard DVD plastic inserts.

I saw it in the shops and was like "I can barely fit usual box sets on my shelf at the moment, how the frell am I going to get THAT on there!?!"

Looks like fun though.
