To Do List
Oct. 15th, 2005 09:31 amWell, since
mistraltoes is doing this, and I keep on putting my own list in her journal, I thought I'd better put it in my LJ so that I can cross things off it.
Things to do today:
-wash hair
-be clothed and in my right mind before 9am so I'm ready for the grocery delivery
-ring up my niece and ask for her assistance with my birthday party (result, indeterminate)
-put clothes away from last week which are still in the laundry basket
-change sheets
-wash clothes (three loads, just put the last one in now, phew!)
- put clothes away that I just washed
- wash dishes
- start thinking about birthday invitations
-work on
tardis_icons icons, or maybe some other icons. I'm putting this on the list because I learned my lesson from last time -- I'm going to do it whether it's on the list or not, so it might as well get official listedness.
- watch Stargate episodes for fic research
- work on charity story
- review some stories, maybe
-ring up
watervole to wish her a happy birthday. Unfortunately I have to wait until the time zones are compatible, which means I could forget, and I fear she may not be at home or something when I do call. (sigh) (had a fun but short conversation, yay!)

Progress report
Date: 2005-10-15 04:33 am (UTC)Interestingly enough I did something from each one of the screencaps, but the second one I tried was just a mess and I've deleted all the files. First one I did, was a fun concept, I like it. Can't be sure if it gets complexity-points, but I like it. Second one I like, I think I may use it myself. I had fun with some new GIMP brushes I got from DeviantArt! Then I tried to do it in a way which would get it more complexity-points, and it looked worse than the original, so I deleted the second version and stuck with the first. That's when I should have stopped... but then I got an idea for how to use the only screencap I hadn't done anything from, in a way that would probably get more complexity-points than the others. So I did. I don't actually like the result, but it looks more similar to the kind of thing that seems to be popular in these competitions. So I'll probably put it in rather than #2, otherwise what would have been the point in making it? No, it doesn't actually look horrible or ugly, but it doesn't make me smile. I consider it an experiment in psychology -- their psychology.
And at least I'm happy with the ones I've done for the "open" section. So much so, that one of them I'm going to do in larger size and put in my gallery when the competition is over. That one was one I did large first, then reduced. I'm not sure which way is the better way of doing icons, I've usually done them small, and I think I'll continue doing them small from now on, because working large and then shrinking is too frustrating, because the large version always looks better. And certainly text is much better when one does it at the small size rather than shrinking it.
One thing I can say, I've been learning a lot.

Date: 2005-10-15 05:58 am (UTC)I've only recently discovered this. I always worked on large pics then reduced them when I was finished--you have to for the comic-style ones--but now I reduce them before doing tweaking and text.
I'd like to see the ones you did.

Date: 2005-10-15 06:12 am (UTC)Thanks! You will, I'll do a post when the current challenge is over. I can't do that before then, or I'd be disqualified. I assume that's intended to ensure that the icons remain anonymous for the voting.

Date: 2005-10-15 07:12 am (UTC)I see that calapine does well and I just found out she only has PS Elements like me. But I downloaded the GIMP last week; it'll take a bit of experimentation till I'm as proficient with that.
Does well in what sense?
I use the GIMP, but you're right about experimentation -- one never really knows what one can do until one tries it out, reads a tutorial or five, and tries them out too.
