Please ignore and/or excuse me while I winge and moan. If it works for
astrogirl2 maybe it will work for me?
I agreed to pinch-hit for Multiverse. Thought it would be fun, hey, don't need to write particularly long, just need to write something reasonable. Problem is, I am suffering from A Total Lack Of Inspiration.
First choice:
Character A: A character I rather like, from a fandom I'm no longer interested in.
Character B: Character from a fandom I've seen one episode of.
Second choice:
Character A: Character from the same fandom I've only seen one episode of.
Character B: Character from a fandom I've seen two episodes of.
However, I could see the potential interestingness of these two characters, except that I don't know enough about them.
Third choice:
Character A: Character from a fandom I've seen everything of, but need refreshment.
Character B: Character from a fandom I saw quite a lot of, but also need refreshment.
Unfortunately, I can't see these characters working together At All.
Since all of these choices involve me sitting down and doing time-consuming research; i.e. sitting and watching episodes, since I do actually have episodes (not that many, true, but some) of all the fandoms mentioned above, I have to decide beforehand, what to reasearch, except that I don't know which of the three to choose to do research for, until I've done some research!
And I have to do all this As Soon As Possible.
Gah.

Date: 2005-08-27 06:19 am (UTC)But I've watched an episode of the series-I've-only-seen-one-episode-of, and started another, and I'm now wondering whether I can bear to continue, because, even though there's two or three characters I rather like, there's one character who affects me like nails screeching down a blackboard; he makes me cringe. And I'm not so sure how much cringing I can bear. I have half-a-dozen or so episodes of this, which I recorded but have not yet seen, but maybe I should just give up on it. After all, one is supposed to be enjoying watching stuff, isn't one? Not forcing oneself.
Think I'll go watch an episode of something else instead.

Date: 2005-08-28 08:47 pm (UTC)In the pilot, I actually admired what they did with him, they made him interesting, with perfectly human motivations, rather than "bwa-ha-ha I am a villain" which was the Baltar of the original series.
However, I can't stand all that stuff with him halucinating Five all the time. Not that I don't find Five interesting too, but I just get so tense about the whole thing. I think it's tied in with my fear of embarrassment which makes it impossible for me to watch situation comedies.
And it's doubly frustrating, because there's actually the seeds of a decent human being in Gaius, but he's so spineless, weak and self-seeking, that he's actually his own worst enemy. How much time can I spend mentally yelling at the screen "grow a spine, you fool!" when I know they'll never redeem him?
Too much frustration all round.

Date: 2005-08-28 09:54 pm (UTC)I like all the BSG characters except for Gaius whom I regard as a total waste of skin. I gather you don't have to write him any more. If I had to, I'd kill him off. :-D I don't know why so many people like the guy. [shudder]

Date: 2005-08-28 10:03 pm (UTC)They might. I never saw the original series so I have no preconceptions about the characters. You're right about him being so weak and spineless. I don't mind the Six hallucinations because she says some interesting things (strange that the cylons have a concept of one God, but if he's one of love, why do they want to destroy the humans they most want to become?) and I love to see the revolting Gaius embarrassed.
But I want to whack him with a lead pipe. He's not just weak; he's a devious, nasty little coward. He works up a test for cylons then lies about the results on certain subjects (not sure how much you've seen) presumably because he's afraid for his own useless little self. The one time he does something good (making a random prediction), it's by sheer accident or divine intervention.

Date: 2005-08-28 10:18 pm (UTC)Oh, she does indeed; it's the fact that Gaius is talking aloud to himself and might get caught that gets to me; I can't really figure out why. All the bits where I'm cringing is where he's, like, wandering around the corridors, and then Six does something which engenders a physical reaction in him (like she chokes him) and then you get this shot of him, pressed up against a wall, choking, with nobody there, and a guard about five feet away, and I just cringe.
He's not just weak; he's a devious, nasty little coward.
Yeah, perfectly understand the whack-with-the-lead-pipe urge. The irony is, his one chance at redemption could be Six, because Six is the only person he's paying much attention to. Which is rather worrying.

Date: 2005-08-28 10:27 pm (UTC)I would if it were someone else (I don't get the humour of embarrassment either) but I long for him to be found out or taken down in some way.
So where are you up to in BSG? We've had all of season 1 but none of 2.
