Dalek, I thought, suffered from the 45-minute format - I felt there was a really good two-parter struggling to get out. For my reactions at the time, see my review (http://www.livejournal.com/users/kalypso_v/22754.html).

I think you put your finger on it -- you're expecting a lot more of this series than you're getting. I haven't found the 45-minute format frustrating -- possibly because, when I saw "Rose" I was very impressed with the go-go-go frenetic pacing. Having lived through that brief period in the original series where they tried to go for 45-minute episodes, and failed badly, I was glad to see that this time they had figured out how to get the pacing right.

I agree that it would, however, been interesting to have had that Dalek as a companion... 8-)

Ah, because It Was Her Fault, and She Did Something Stupid? Well, yes, it was and she did, but her heart was in the right place, unlike, say, Adam in the previous episode, who also Did Something Stupid but (a) did it for selfish reasons and (b) tried to blame the Doctor for not supervising him properly. Wheras in this one, the Doctor had been taking an enormous risk in going there in the first place, it was a disaster waiting to happen, to some degree. And Rose took responsibility and apologized, which is what one is supposed to do when one messes up. So it was good.

There was something wonderful about the ordinariness of the people. This was not a story about rulers and space empires. The story evoked a genuine sense of warmth and family. Yet, at heart it was more of a "guy's" episode than the episodes thus far - about making big decisions rather than living with them.

Yep. The bedtime story was different. Though I wonder whether that affected Rose's memories or not -- which version does she remember? Or does she remember both?

I think it's the guy they cast to be Rose's Dad that does it for me.
