And The Name Is...

...not the one which came first in the poll. Firstly, I was taking account of the LJ comments as well, and secondly, any name which had a reasonable objection to it, got ruled out even if it was popular, not because I'm being overly negative, but if someone pointed out problems with a name, and I agreed with them, it became a name I was uncomfortable using. Hence, "Artisan of Awesome" got ruled out, "Handmade by KJA" shouldn't even have been on the poll, "Imaginary Cheese" dropped out when all the logo ideas I came up with were really dumb, and "Diverse Devisings" made my tongue stumble every time I tried to say it aloud.

So the name, ladies and gentlebeings, is... Essence of Eclectic. I think it's very me. I've spent yesterday and today working on various logo ideas, and I have come up with a design I rather like.

Yes, I like this. The above black-and-white version is staying. What I'm not sure about is the ones below, the greyscale and colour versions, which one is the best? So I'm asking y'all, with another poll. LJ folks can answer in comments as before.

To me, the logo looks best when the teardrop is dominant, which keeps the logo relatively simple and evocative -- once you put the teardrop behind and the surrounding triangle and hexagon pop to the fore, all those intersecting shapes make it look cluttered and flat to me.

And Essence of Eclectic is a fine name, even if it didn't pop out to me at first the way "Imaginary Cheese" did. I like the way your logo suggests a bottle containing said Essence. :)

My attempts at a logo for Imaginary Cheese were awful. Enough to make me embarrassed about the whole thing. Whereas Essense of Eclectic just worked.

I like the black and white logo symbology and think it's fitting. :)

For the greyscale set, any of A/B/D look ok - I think A/B match the black-and-white logo better for a theme. For both of those options, I'd prefer a bit more contrast between the swirl and the background of the teardrop though - I find the bottom right section of the swirl on A and the top left of the swirl on B fade into the teardrop's grey a lot. Given the size of the swirl in those two extremities, I chose B - but if the teardrop in A was a little lighter at the bottom right A would match your black and white logo better.

For the colour versions the colours are pretty but they make the logos very "busy" to look at. I find that makes it hard to distinguish the boundaries of the shapes that the colours reside in. For the swirl, I like the gold/red at the bottom of A - the gold in particular stands out against the blue, and C seems to be the worst for losing the shapes, but in reality they all take effort to resolve which isn't ideal for a logo that you want people to easily recognise. One suggestion I had would be to limit the amount of colours in each particular shape's gradients and using a different set of colours for each or to choose colour gradients with different saturation/brightness values for each shape, so as to make the shape areas more distinct. It may also be beneficial to test what the logos would look like with various versions of colour-blindness - there appear to be some gimp filters that can help with testing that: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-display-filter-dialog.html#gimp-deficient-vision

It was the third or fourth attempt, and it all just clicked.

One suggestion I had would be to limit the amount of colours in each particular shape's gradients and using a different set of colours for each or to choose colour gradients with different saturation/brightness values for each shape, so as to make the shape areas more distinct.

I was using difference layers, including adding the colour by putting one gradient on top and making that a difference layer too. I kept on trying different pre-made gradients until I got one I liked. Thing is, I wanted something that turned out a bit rainbow-y without being an actual rainbow gradient; lots of colours would indicate eclecticness, I thought. Doing separate gradients for each shape would be too much of a pain to get right.

I like the colour logos because they are pretty. I'm thinking the black-and-white version would be the main one; not sure if I'll even need to use the greyscale ones, because situations where I couldn't use colour, I'd be just as well off using the black-and-white one, I think.

I can't decide between the colour versions. But for grey scale not the black swirl it gets lost in the shadow. With the white swirl it depends on whether you want the teardrop or the triangles to be dominant.

I like D in both the greyscale and the color versions. I agree the black swirl gets lost in the greyscale ones. And I like D the best in both because I think the intersecting shapes gives it more of a cut jewel effect.

Wow, those are all gorgeous! Love the name you chose. I would go with A or D for the grayscale, and C for the color (I like the way it looks like it has an extra shine/glow coming off the gold area).
