kerravonsen: animated sequence of geeks with the word "geek" around them (geek-anim)

Oh I am so tired... been having some bad nights, woke up at 5 this morning... Oh well.
However, I'm also tired because I've been very busy today, and the day is not over... except that maybe I should declare the day over anyway.

What did I do?

  • got my grocery delivery and put the food away
  • moved filing cabinet into study (the files are still all over the spare bed, though)
  • moved a bookshelf (and books) into study
  • moved some sets of plastic drawers into study
  • Started setting up katspace.org. This is now a virtual machine hosted by Redwood Virtual. I'm a bit worried that it doesn't have enough memory, but I hope that if all it's doing is running a webserver, it should be okay.

    • logged in and changed root password
    • created a user specifically for the website to be on
    • updated the debian install, setting various configs needed for that
    • installed and configured shorewall
    • installed CPANPLUS and lots of dependent perl modules
    • installed and configured postfix, and set up some forwarding
    • installed and configured Apache 2
    • and banged my head against Apache 2
    • and finally got a test page up, pointing to the correct spot
    • turned off webhop, but I'll have to see if it works tomorrow; the idea is to have www.katspace.org and katspace.org be aliases of each other, not forwarded. Though the forwarding does work, so I'll put it back if need be.
    • set up ssh keys so I can easily get from my home system to this one

  • put in a load of washing

The paucity of memory on katspace.org leaves me with a dilemma: my own machine, katspace.homelinux.org, is plenty fast and has plenty memory, but does not have a fast connection, while katspace.org has a fast connection, but not much memory, and I don't actually know how fast the machine is supposed to be, but since it's a kernel running on a kernel, it wouldn't be as fast as a bare machine anyway.

My original thought was to run a mailing list server on katspace.org, back when I was expecting my home system to be katspace.org, and when I got the virtual hosting idea I was still very inclined to run the mailing list server here, because (however deluded the idea) I felt I would have more control if it was on my own physical machine, so this week I went ahead anyway. And the realization of how small the memory is on katspace.org has clinched it.
Yes, I have a mailinglist server here on katspace.homelinux.org. Mailman, which means it has a web interface, but hopefully that won't be as much of a strain as a whole fullblown website would be. And mail itself doesn't have to be lightening fast.

I've only got a "Test" list so far, but I'm intending to move gen_fic_crit over, and make a Posy list; not sure if I want to move the txt2html list as well; probably not.

And not only did I get Mailman working, but Dovecot (an IMAP server) and Squirrelmail (a webmail application) and changed over all my mailing list subscriptions to my home address, so now I can check my mail, in real time, from anywhere! Whee!
To do that, I was also moving lots of folders around, to make them suitable for use with an IMAP server, but I think it's worth it.

I'm now rather torn... I'm a mutt user from way back, don't leave home without it, but I love the tree setup of subfolders in Squirrelmail, as well as the fact that it shows me the number of messages/new messages in each folder, which mutt used to do, but I haven't figured out how to get it to play nice with IMAP...
But there are other features of Squirrelmail which make it unusable for my regular mailer -- I am so annoyed by this old-fashioned "all sent mail must go in the Sent folder" idea, instead of sensibly, like mutt can do, having all the correspondence from and to a particular address, go in one folder. That makes it possible to follow a conversation, which is great if one happens to be going over old correspondence.

Oh well.

Still to do:

  • Sort through the files on the spare bed, throwing out most of them, and going through and grabbing other files which are in boxes and stuff, and putting them properly in the filing cabinet (sigh)
  • Now that I've figured out how to do it, set up katspace.homelinux.org website to be a SUexec virtual host website (with a new user specifically for that purpose), rather than the default one.
  • Change the website makefiles to upload files to katspace.org rather than katspace.net
  • Install Posy properly on both katspace.homelinux.org and katspace.org so that they are core modules rather than private modules -- I had to have them as private modules because it wasn't worth trying to ask my web-host to install them, not when I needed them to be updated as soon as I released a new version.
  • Put a permanent redirect from katspace.net to katspace.org
  • Try to track down my remaining katspace.net email addresses and change them to katspace.homelinux.org addresses. Some will be easy, others will probably not be worth trying...
  • Create the gen_fic_crit@lists.katspace.homelinux.org mailing list, and transfer everyone over.
  • Create the posy-devel@lists.katspace.homelinux.org mailing list, and invite everyone that I can find in the CPAN-testers logs, to join.

One thing I'm telling myself not to worry about is the fact that some may consider "katspace.homelinux.org" to be a clumsy, minor, and overlong domain name (it's one of the free ones from dyndns.org) but I'm not going to be intimidated -- because, like, it's absolutely true: my machine at home is kat's space, at home, running linux, and is not commercial. And yay for Linux at Home! So there.

The other thing I'm not sure about is whether I should let the katspace.net domain name lapse when I let my web-host go, or whether I should grab the domain and redirect it, like I do with katspace.com. (shrug)

As for right now... I'm torn between impatiently wanting to have katspace.org up and running, and feeling tired and achy and weary and wanting a break. I'll have a break for now, anyway.

Yay for you! What a lot you've accomplished today. :)

I do like keeping the conversations from both sides in one folder, though I move them over from 'Sent' by hand. I'm sure there's a way to set it to sort automatically, it's just one of the things I haven't done yet.

I'm impressed.

I finished my AU and ate marshmallows.
