And go you for organising, and taking the trouble to canvass opinion after the fact as well.

Date: 2005-05-30 03:05 am (UTC)I think 6 or 8 weeks is fine. I usually say I prefer 500 words as a minimum, but 750 seems to be OK, too. It's when it gets up to 1000 that I start deciding that means I have to have a plot and panicking. :)
I'm not actually sure keeping the authors concealed served much of a purpose this time. There were few enough of us participating that it was pretty easy to figure out who wrote what. (Though that was probably helped by the fact that we didn't know the identities were going to be kept secret, and a lot of people had already talked about things like what fandom they were writing.) I do see the point of concealing the authors, and it can be fun, but it's probably not terrible useful unless you've got a lot more people than we had. Plus, it would have been nice to be able to respond to the comments earlier.
I'm torn on the issue of requesting specific fandoms, as evidenced by the fact that I clicked several mutually contradictory answers. :) It would be very desirable for everybody to have a story written for their lyrics that's in a fandom they actually follow, but I'm not sure it's practical unless, again, you have a lot more people participating. (Or unless you limit the acceptable fandoms severely, I guess, which would probably exclude a lot of people.) Maybe you'll get a lot more people next year, which would be really cool, though I imagine you won't know how many until they actually sign up, which makes it kind of hard to decide on the rules based on how many you have. (And, I hate to say it, but the no-slash/no-over-PG-rated restrictions are probably going to really limit the number of people who will participate.)
Regardless, barring major problems I will definitely be in next year, if it happens! :)

Date: 2005-05-30 06:21 am (UTC)That's a very good point: I agree it's nicer to be able to respond immediately. I do think the comments-on-LJ setup was a good idea.

True... the number of people participating is rather out of my hands, though. I can invite, but I can't induce.
Or unless you limit the acceptable fandoms severely, I guess, which would probably exclude a lot of people.
No, I wouldn't want to do that! I'm interested in far too many fandoms myself.
And, I hate to say it, but the no-slash/no-over-PG-rated restrictions are probably going to really limit the number of people who will participate.
It doesn't matter. I don't really care about numbers -- numbers aren't a measure of success, what's important is that people had fun doing it, and made some good stuff. The no-slash/no-adult rule is not negotiable. Everything else is, but not that.
Regardless, barring major problems I will definitely be in next year, if it happens!
Great!

Date: 2005-05-30 02:16 pm (UTC)It did work well, I think! The only drawback is that we didn't get notices when somebody had commented on our story, but I kept checking back on the thread, which was easy enough to di.

Absolutely! The only reason I bring it up is because I think certain things only work really well if you have a lot more people.

Date: 2005-05-30 06:26 am (UTC)I'd still like to do some sort of by-fandom stuff, but it's true that it could end up being very difficult to ensure that people could write in the requested fandoms, but I did also get the impression from this year that a number of people found it difficult because they didn't have any fandoms in common with their assignments. Also, having fandoms could make it easier to pick songs in the first place; I know I was trying to go for very general songs because I didn't know what fandoms my assignee would be able to write in.
Maybe it would simply be helpful to have fandom lists purely as a guide for making assignments, but still have no actual restrictions about what fandoms a story could be written in?
