This time I watched them back-to-back.
I liked the second half better than the first half.
I really liked the scene in the Black Archive where Kate and Bonnie-the-Zygon are poised over the Osgood Boxes, and the Doctor tries to persuade them not to push the buttons. That was the best bit; passionate and persuasive. That war is nothing but waste. That he asked the important question: "What happens after you've won? What then?" And that war is nothing but the temper-tantrum of a child. Good stuff.
And that the boxes were really empty.
And that he just wiped Kate's memory of that "like I did the last fifteen times".
Of course, some people might think the whole two-parter was a heavy-handed parable about terrorism...
but maybe we need heavy-handed parables about terrorism.
Yay Osgood!
Yes, very salient point: she's not going to say whether she's Zygon or human until the answer doesn't matter. There are clues pointing in both directions, so I'm not going to bother guessing.

Date: 2015-11-15 01:08 pm (UTC)I think the general consensus was that the scene over the boxes was a tour de force, the rest of it not so much. And I was unhappy with the implication that the only good Zygons are Zygons who are happy to live quietly in a human closet. Some people have argued that Osgood's line about how she would reveal which she was "the day nobody cares about the answer" meant that she was looking forward to a time when Zygons could live openly alongside humans, and that that was what the Osgoods were working for. I hope so.

Date: 2015-11-15 11:50 pm (UTC)It's not something with a simple solution, really.
Some people have argued that Osgood's line about how she would reveal which she was "the day nobody cares about the answer" meant that she was looking forward to a time when Zygons could live openly alongside humans, and that that was what the Osgoods were working for.
It reminds me of the episode with Eleven and the Silurians, and of the Paternoster Gang... that there might be a time when some day, the Silurians could come out of their sleep and live alongside humans.
Problem is... I don't know the answer.
I mean, people have had a lot of answers in regard to wars, terrorism, intolerance, prejudice... and they are ALL wrong. Why are they all wrong? Because none of them have worked!
The most popular answer (at least, the one most often employed) is "Kill the dissenters!"
We all know that doesn't work, since violence begets violence.
The next most popular answer is "Kill the dissent!" or, in other words, make sure everyone believes the same thing, whether that be (a) force everyone to be Christians, or (b) force everyone to follow Islam, or (c) outlaw all religions and force everyone to be atheists...
This, of course, is impossible. Persecution strengthens faith, and tyranny provokes revolution.
The third most popular answer is "Everyone else ought to be more tolerant except me," or "I'll tolerate everyone except the intolerant."
This is pretty popular because it doesn't require anyone to do anything. Mind you, it is completely useless because if nobody does anything, nothing will change.
Then we get the true peacemakers, who not only preach understanding and forgiveness, but do it. The solution #3 people agree with them, but don't actually do anything. The solution #2 and #3 people don't listen. So this solution is a fail because people won't do it, and you can't make them do it.
Question: Why can't we all get along?
Answer: Because most of us don't want to.
(sigh)

Date: 2015-11-15 10:07 am (UTC)I'm hoping that Osgood might be the next Companion. (I'm sure they could find a way around the "has to remain on Earth" thing if they wanted to.)

Date: 2015-11-15 10:12 am (UTC)Naw, she won't be; if they wanted her to be a companion, they would have done it then and there.
I'm just glad that Osgood is alive.
