kerravonsen: Crafty: a medly of beads (craft)

Late last night I made myself another lucet. This one was made of 2mm Aluminium wire, string, and black hot-glue. The string and hot-glue were for the handle, to build up around the wire handle. The lucet part was good, it was the shape I intended it to be, just a little wider than the fork, slightly bent out at the ends, parallel in the middle... with sufficient hammering that it would stay where it was put.

So I played with my new lucet on the bus this morning, and I came to a few conclusions:

1. It isn't just that the prongs needed to be wider apart, they also needed to be round or square instead of flat. This is because it's easier to pull on a loop if there's a space between the front string of the loop and the back string of the loop. But with both the fork and the wire lucet, because the prongs were quite flat, there was very little gap, which made it harder to grasp the loop.

2. Metal is a good material for lucets. Not that I've tried a wood lucet (which seems to be the most common material) but the wood would have to be sanded very smooth in order to be as smooth as metal.

3. Rayon is a good material for lucet-cord, because it is slippery. This and the previous point are because lucet-cord needs to have the yarn able to move freely in relation to both itself and the prongs, otherwise one can't pull the stitch snug as it should be.

4. Luceting is addictive, and I need to take more breaks. This is very relevant to what happened later in the day, because I think I must have weakened my right wrist doing the luceting, otherwise I wouldn't have caused it injury when I twisted it just the wrong way this afternoon.

Yeah. My wrist is now strapped up. (sigh)
No more luceting for a while. At least the weekend is coming up.
