SED 05: Thinking

Stumbled across this in my websurfing: "I'm not telling you it's going to be easy. I'm telling you it's going to be worth it."
My first thought was "if it was easy, it would eventually be boring". We actually do like challenges. When we have enough energy and have rested enough from our stress, we do stuff. Human beings are kind of crazy when you think about it: we do difficult things for fun! We are so needy for mental stimulation that we invented these things called "games" which make us think hard when we don't have to!
Weird.

Date: 2015-05-06 02:49 am (UTC)I used to belong to the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). I would spend hours constructing garb, and making things that had no use in the modern world. Then on some weekends, I would pack up and go to some campground where I would have to walk for ages just to take a shower or go to the bathroom. I'd swelter in the heat and freeze in the rain, spend much of my time washing dishes or telling someone where to park. I would get exhausted, sunburned, bruised and skint. And at the end of it all, my friends and I would talk about how soon we could do it all again.
In fandom, I spend days and hours writing fics and doing research for them, often for something that will just be a little throwaway line. I get involved in running challenges and modding communities, and though I sometimes complain about how hard it all is, I'd be rather insulted at the idea I should give it all up.
I love to make things that are challenging and difficult just because I can.
I'll spend hours cooking for company, and enjoy every minute of it.
I enjoy my actual job. But I wouldn't do it for fun, or without being paid.
Humans are strange critters.

Date: 2015-05-06 06:07 am (UTC)One reason I didn't join the SCA, though it was tempting, was that it was clear from the people I saw in our local group, that one would have to dedicate one's entire life to it in order to do it "properly", and I wasn't mad-keen enough to do that.
I love to make things that are challenging and difficult just because I can.
That sense of accomplishment is something money can't buy.
